11 Celebs Who Wear Wigs And Hair Extensions To Create Their Looks

"I can’t believe I spent a whole damn year growing out my curls under those wigs for y’all to say my natural hair looks like a wig."

Whether it's masking hair loss, covering for hair damage, or simply because someone wants to change up their hair more often than natural follicles can allow, there are lots of reasons why someone might opt for wigs and extensions.

So, here are some celebs who have recently sported some pretty wonderful faux hair:

1. Keira Knightley

At least from 2011–2016, Keira wore wigs on screen after experiencing hair loss from severe damage. "I have dyed my hair virtually every color imaginable for different films," Keira she InStyle UK in 2016. "It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head! So for the past five years I've used wigs, which is the greatest thing that's ever happened to my hair." It certainly tracks when you compare her hair in 2014's The Imitation Game next to her hair at the premiere.

2. Halsey

Halsey made use of wigs in 2018 to grow out her natural curls after it was damaged from a bleaching attempt, but found that the reaction to her real hair was not what she expected. She tweeted at the time, "I can’t believe I spent a whole damn year growing out my curls under those wigs for y’all to say my natural hair looks like a wig."

3. Kim Kardashian

Yes, the fact that Kim K typically sports extensions and wigs might not be super surprising, sure. But she did appear in a TikTok last year where her extension-free, significantly shorter hair could be seen.

Similarly, Khloé Kardashian loves a good wig — to the point where she has an entire closet dedicated to fake hair. Her natural hair texture is actually pretty curly.

Cardi B has long been candid about her hair growth journey, crediting her now-long hair on homemade oil and “secret vegetable water.” That being said, the rapper has sported some very iconic wigs over the years.

In 2019, Sarah said that she experienced hair loss from endometriosis and kidney dysplasia treatments. Subsequently, she had to wear hair extensions while playing Haley on Modern Family. Moreover, she said that her hair had grown back much more curly than it had been before.

Keke even posted a video in August where she dared viewers to find the lace in her wig: “I'm trying to find it. I'm trying to find it. I can't see it, call me John Cena.”

Before that, in 2021, she said that she'd been on a "journey" of loving her natural hair, writing on Instagram, "I really wanted to regain the confidence I had as a kid when it came to my hair in its natural state while still being able to explore a wig, a weave, or anything! I just never wanted to feel like I needed it more than the actual hair on my head."

When Florence debuted her shaved head at the Met Gala this year, she revealed that she'd actually been wearing a wig in prior weeks to allow for the dramatic reveal: “I thought, what is a better way than to release it at The Met with Pier Paolo?"

Similarly, when Billie dyed her hair from black and green to blonde in 2021, she wore a wig for six weeks so that her hair could be bleached with minimal damage. In fact, at least one of the wigs she wore was a "Billie Eilish Halloween costume wig."

In fact, Ariana previously explained that her signature ponytail look started as a way to mask the hair damage from dyeing her hair red for Victorious. Ariana is another person on this list whose natural hair texture is actually curly, but she seldom shows it.

11. Finally, Elton John

In his 2019 memoir, Elton revealed that he had a failed hair transplant after he started losing his hair in the mid-'70s. He ultimately decided to wear wigs, saying, "People were absolutely obsessed with my hair, or lack of it, for years. Then I started wearing a wig, and virtually no one’s mentioned it since.”
