Magazine articles and studies once met with interest suddenly only create skepticism. Every "proven study" now requires an in-depth statistical evaluation to see if the reported "facts" can really be generalized to the majority population. Do increases in ice-cream sales really lead to increases in criminal activity? I think not!

Family and Friend's Therapist: Free of Charge

What happened to being a great listener? Suddenly, among friends and family, the psychology student transitions from always knowing what to say to having all of the answers - even at three a.m. in the morning. No worries though; we find it flattering to know we are helpful!

Self Diagnosis is Normal

No one believes in the power of their practice moreso than a psychology student. We are quick to assess ourselves and what theory or practice will best help us through stressful situations we encounter.

Patience *and Silence are Virtues

Over the course of our studies, we slowly become the most patient and silent people on campus. After all, that is the best way for us to observe those around us and wait for our predictions to come true.

And even though our patience and silence may be intimidating to some, our ability to completely open ourselves and be vulnerable with others tends to be a large source of comfort for the people around us.

Our highest priority is our research and we spend many days and nights contemplating hypotheses, an experiment, interpreting data and ultimately presenting our results to the science community in the hopes of being published.

The DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) forever remains a bit of an overwhelming topic for us, but we mention it so often because we want society to have a solidified and knowledgable understanding of the various mental illnesses casually used in daily conversation. We hope to advocate for mental health and encourage others to do so in the process!
