Start in Durango, Colorado (if you spend a few days, visit nearby Silverton). The Scenic Southwest Trip

Visit [Monticello](http://home.monticello.org/) in Charlottesville, VA, then head up to spend a day or two in [Washington, DC](https://www.nps.gov/nama/index.htm). Drive from there to Philadelphia and visit [Independence Hall](https://www.nps.gov/inde/index.htm), then on your way out stop by (or take a day trip to) [Valley Forge](https://www.nps.gov/vafo/index.htm). Skip NYC this time and head to Boston, where you can walk the [Freedom Trail](https://www.thefreedomtrail.org/). (Have more momentum? Head out to Cape Cod, Nantucket, or Martha's Vineyard to relax).

The Historic East Coast Trip

Start in Portland, and take a day (or more!) trip to the [Multnomah Falls](http://www.oregon.com/attractions/multnomah_falls) and [Abiqua Falls](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/abiqua-falls-trail). Start fresh again from Portland, before heading down the [Oregon Lighthouse Tour](http://traveloregon.com/trip-ideas/itineraries/road-trip-oregon-lighthouse-tour/). End your trip awed by the gigantic trees at [Redwood National Park](https://www.nps.gov/redw/index.htm).

The Pacific Northwest-ish Trip

Start in [Holland, Michigan](http://www.holland.org/things-to-do/dutch-experience/), where you can check out tulips March through May, and a real Dutch windmill. Drive down to the [Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore](https://www.nps.gov/indu/index.htm) to relax on a beach, then spend a day or two doing touristy Chicago. Then head down to [Starved Rock State Park](http://www.starvedrockstatepark.org/), [Maquoketa Caves State Park](http://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Iowa-State-Parks/ParkDetails/ParkID/610127), and the [Effigy Mounds National Monument](https://www.nps.gov/efmo/index.htm) — either as day trips or by staying in the nearby towns.
