Horizon 2020, is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme with a budget of 79 billion euros available until the year 2020. After Brexit, UK citizens, businesses, charities or universities will no longer be able to access or apply for funding from Horizon 2020. Though Science Minister, Jo Johnson has assured that world class research 'will endure' the funding will no longer be provided by the EU.

5. Retiring in another EU country just got a little more complicated

Heading to the sunny, cultured shores of Italy, France or Spain for retirement might not be an option for UK citizens anymore. There are already an estimated 1.2 million Brits living throughout other European nations, with the highest concentration located in Spain. Many expats are already beginning to question their ability to keep owning or renting in EU countries, while still being able to claim their pension and health benefits.

Due to the loss of research funding from the EU, many students within the European Union might look to other countries to further their education, despite the prestige and notoriety of universities in the UK. EU students attending a university in a neighboring country pay the same amount that they would in their own country. Though UK universities will now be able to increase the tuition for EU students, this might deter the international number of applicants received all together.

Britain only produces 54 percent of what it eats, meaning the country relies heavily on importing food from other countries, especially those within the European Union. Though trade will definitely continue, importing goods from the EU could be significantly more expensive, especially with the drop in value of the British pound.

The EU also sets extremely high standards in the food that is grown within the region. This is a headache for some farmers hoping to grow GMO foods using powerful herbicides and pesticides, but for consumers it ensures a safer, more sustainable product on the supermarket shelves.

9. Maybe Scotland

Scotland voted "no" to independence 55 percent to 45 percent in the referendum held last year. In the EU referendum they voted 62 percent to remain. Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, raised the idea of a second independence vote as a solution for Scotland to remain in the EU. Only time will tell, but the likelihood of Scottish independence just got a little more real.
