10 Musicals For People Who Just Don't Like Musicals

Do you ever wish that you could spend sometime with your friends, family members or significant other watching a musical? Or maybe YOU just hate musicals. Well here a few shows that may just change your mind about the good ole' song and dance we call a musical.

10. Avenue Q

Something that makes Avenue Q different than other shows is it's use of Puppets AND it's uncensored nature. This show while it may look like it's for kids, is definitely for the adults, as it touches on the topics of porn, racism, and accepting people if they were gay. It will have you tearing up at it's funny and overtly sexual nature.

9. Carrie: The Musical

Stephen King graced the world with Carrie and now the theatre world graces you with a musical version. The musical follows closely the storyline you always have known, while filling your ears with haunting musical numbers. Based on simplicity and perfect songs this musical will have shivers running up and down your spin.

8. Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening is a musical about sexually charged German teenagers like no other…oh wait because there isn't another. Why should you see it? It'll have you thinking about what it was like growing up, the mystery of falling in love and the confusion that comes with it, but it is by no means mushy. You'll be on an emotional roller-coaster of happiness, angry, tears and angst that no other show could provide.

7. We Will Rock You

One word: QUEEN

Never have I ever sat in an audience where a grumpy grandfather and a church group were laughing and singing along at the same time, UNTIL I attended We Will Rock You. With a combination of AMAZING costuming and incredible music We Will Rock You encourages the audience to join in as they try to bring Rock and Roll back from the dead. After watching it you leave with an adrenaline rush that very few musicals can give.

6. Rock Of Ages

You may connect this title to the movie where you said "Wait, Tom Cruise sings?" and you may have also wondered why they cast Julianne Hough as a rock chick, but that's another story.

Rock of Ages encapsulates some of the best rock and roll songs this world has known, minus any Def Leppard who they couldn't get the rights from, but other than that this musical like the songs in it is a hit.

5. Next To Normal

Next to Normal is so good it almost had this writer doing a thesis project based solely on it. This show doesn't need to hide behind elaborate costumes, scene changes or dance numbers, the heart of the piece rests within the writing, music and message. It's a favorite of many and once you see it you'll understand why. The story line will pull you in and have you routing for the characters to have a happy ending.

4. Heathers: The Musical

Based off of the 80's hit, Heathers: The Musical will have you reaching for a red scrunchy and trying to get your hands on the closest slushy. Not only is this musical incredibly funny with it's quirky female lead, Veronica Sawyer and anthem about blue balls, it also has audiences on the edge of their seats waiting for signature lines from the film. Never seen the film? Don't worry, you don't have to be a cult follower to love it! The Musical follows the movie well, but also holds it's own with innovative twists.

3. Once

This calm, indie musical will have you laid back while you follow the love story of Guy and Girl. Not only is the music brilliant, all of the actors play instruments, the band is the actors on stage! Once brought one of my guy friends who never cries to tears, it didn't win 8 Tony awards for nothing!

2. American Idiot

Any Green Day lovers out there? American Idiot is sure to be a favorite of most of it's viewers, not only will it reach out and touch your heart, you'll also be jamming along to familiar Green Day hits. Nothing about this musical is standard besides the incredible talents of the actors. Get taken into a world where Drugs and Sex can make and then break you. By the end we've hope you had the time of your life. (See what I did there?)

1. The Book of Mormon

Coming in at number 1 is the hilarious Book of Mormon written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the same guys that brought you South Park!). This musical follows two young Elders on their mission to Uganda, to spread the word of Jesus Christ. Just for a sneak peek the last line of the musical is "I still have maggots in my scrotum." This show is guaranteed to have singing the songs and laughing until you cry as men dress up as women and some Ugandans sing about having sex with frogs.
