15 Bucket List Items Only MU Students Will Understand

Four years fly by. Cross these things off your list before you graduate!

1. Go to Fire on the Mountain.

You’re guaranteed to find MU students in this popular restaurant at some point during the weekend.

2. Go to Washington Family Ranch.

At the beginning of the school year, students go on the All-School Retreat at Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch. If you have the chance, don’t miss the special stargazing field trip Dr. Koivisto periodically takes students on.

3. Meet Roger in his own café on campus (and say “rabbit” before he does on the first of every month).

Roger has been volunteering at MU for more than 30 years, and is quite iconic. So, naturally, we had to name the on-campus coffee shop after him. We can’t quite decide where the “rabbit game” came from, but it’s been around for as long as anyone can remember.

4. Grow the perfect mustache in time for Mustache Movember.

We know that No-Shave November is a thing, and we celebrate with our own MU twist.

5. Grab food from a Portland food cart — there’s a plethora of them surrounding MU.

You never have to plan where to eat when you’re in Portland. Just drive to a nearby food cart pod and choose from the global array of cuisines: Thai, Egyptian, Czech, Peruvian, you name it. It’s a no-frills dining experience that’s good to your belly — and friendly on your student-sized wallet.

6. Drink a London Fog, preferably from Roger’s Café.

This delicious mixture of Earl Grey tea, steamed milk and vanilla is a student favorite. If MU had an official school drink, this would be it.

7. Volunteer at Spring Thaw.

This meaningful ministry, traditionally run by Dr. Rob Hildebrand, hosts local high schoolers for a memorable three-day retreat that is in no way short on fun.

8. Study the Torah scroll with Dr. Kutz and Dr. Josberger.

The ancient manuscript was recently gifted to MU and has already presented students with numerous learning opportunities. It’s a pretty significant (and ancient!) artifact.

9. Experience “Pink Mist” (and maybe even get your ring by spring).

April showers bring many pink blossoms to MU’s campus in the spring. The cherry trees burst to life and frost the school like a pink snow. When you see the frost melt and the flowers bud, expect an increase in engagement announcements — it just happens.

10. Join an intramural.

One great way to get connected on campus is by joining an intramural sports team: Choose from soccer, ultimate Frisbee, basketball and volleyball.

11. Hike Angel’s Rest in the Columbia River Gorge.

The landscape of the Pacific Northwest is astonishing, and the Columbia River Gorge is no exception. Take the 30-minute drive to the Angel’s Rest trailhead, and prepare to be filled with awe by the view you’ll get at the top.

12. Take Bible Study Methods with Dr. Lubeck.

Multnomah

You’ll study, study and study the book of Jonah, but by the end of the class, you’ll have learned a lot from this well-known professor.

13. Play pool and ping pong in the JCA.

It’s a popular means of friendly competition around here.

14. Enjoy fruit from one of Cat’s fruit sculptures.

15. Attend Catacombs.

These once-a-month chapel sessions bring students closer together through shared testimonies and worship.
