10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD COMMUTE TO WORK ON A BIKE
It's the best way to wake up and feel refreshed in the morning. There is nothing like starting your day with a bike ride and a cup of coffee at the office.
It's good for your mental health. Get your blood circulating rather than boiling while sitting around and waiting for traffic to budge. Seriously, the stress of traffic has a major impact on our health. Check out this article by CNN correspondent Elizabeth Landau.
It's good for your physical health. Riding bikes is great for your cardiovascular health, and the stop and go nature of bike commuting will strengthen your legs.
You save money. Imagine your commute is 10 miles round trip (this is the average American commute distance). That's 50 miles a week. Say you get about 250 miles on a tank that costs $30 to fill. It will only take 5 weeks to save a tank of gas -and that's if you're only commuting 5 miles one way. Not to mention these are miles saved on the normal wear and tear expenses of your car.
Nobody likes to sit in traffic. If you see a line of traffic, just hop on the sidewalk and bypass everything. Because of this, it takes me significantly longer to drive my car to work than it does to ride my bike.
Bikes are fun! Need I say more?
You get tax benefits. You can get $20 bucks a month just for riding your bike to work. No joke. Check it out.
Don't worry about locating a parking spot and then taking more time to walk to your destination. If you're on a bike just pull right up to your destination and lock up. This is another reason that bike commuting is often quicker than driving your car.
Sweating is not a big deal. Even during the summer in most parts of the country, mornings are cool enough to keep you dry. Take your time riding and enjoy your commute. You might sweat some on your ride home once temperatures have risen, but who cares. If you have to wear business attire just bring a change of clothes.
You don't need a fancy bike. I am of the opinion that most people can commute on a single speed. This type of bike is simple, typically cheaper than geared bikes, and really easy to maintain. But if you want gears on your bike, either grab your dusty bike from your garage or find one on Craig's list. Either way, I'd take it to your local bike shop to make sure that it is safe to ride.
