23 Amazing Moments From The "Harry Potter Movies" That Aren't In The Books

"The lighting of the wands after Dumbledore's death to show respect."

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us their favorite moments from the Harry Potter movies that are not in the books. Here are some of the best responses:

    1. When everyone lights their wands for Dumbledore.

    Warner Bros.

"The lighting of the wands after Dumbledore's death to show respect. Maggie Smith and Gemma Jones' expressions just make it so much sadder."

    petty-dabbler

    2. When Harry reminds Professor Umbridge that he must not tell lies.

    Warner Bros.

"In Order of the Phoenix, when Umbridge is being taken by the centaurs, she tells Harry to tell them that she means no harm. And he comes back with, 'I’m sorry, Professor. I must not tell lies.' It’s so savage and perfect that I keep forgetting it’s not in the books!"

    3. When Snape throws himself before the trio to protect them from werewolf Lupin.

    Warner Bros.

"In Prisoner of Azkaban, Snape stands in front of Hermione, Ron, and Harry to shield them from Lupin when he becomes a werewolf. It shows that he still does his job, and he cares somewhat about them."

    4. When Harry and Hermione share a dance in the tent.

    Warner Bros.

"Harry and Hermione's dance is cute. It's a golden moment for Harry and Hermione shippers, or you can just see it as Harry trying to cheer up his best friend."

    5. When the Gryffindor boys mess around like actual kids.

    Warner Bros.

"My favorite movie moment is in Prisoner of Azkaban on the first night back in the dorms. You get that scene of the Gryffindor boys eating the different candies and genuinely just having a moment that’s completely normal for a group of 13-year-old boys. I was a camp counselor for five years, and I absolutely adored seeing my kiddos have moments like that."

    6. When Ron and Hermione share a private first kiss.

    Warner Bros.

"I love seeing Ron and Hermione actually killing the Horcrux in the Chamber of Secrets and then having their first kiss there. In the book, we only hear them talk about it, and then their first kiss is after, in front of Harry. I like that the movie can take us away from Harry and show Ron and Hermione sharing a private moment."

    7. When Harry confronts Snape like a badass.

    Warner Bros.

"Harry standing up to Snape in front of the whole school. Snape asks anyone with information about Harry's whereabouts to step forward, and out walks Harry like a total legend."

    Dumbdrunkanddeadly

    8. When Professor Slughorn tells the story of Lily's fish.

    Warner Bros.

"The scene where Professor Slughorn describes the fish that Lily gave him in The Half-Blood Prince. He tells Harry that Lily's spell was 'a beautiful piece of magic, wondrous to behold.' He goes on to say that one day the fish disappeared, and he realized that Lily had died.

"I think many people think that the story of the fish is included in the book because it fits so perfectly — I was definitely surprised when I realized it isn't!"

    megson87

    9. When Barty Crouch Jr. gives himself away.

    Warner Bros.

"Mad-Eye Moody/Barty Crouch Jr.'s reveal after the Triwizard Tournament is SO much better in the movie. Moody messes up by asking about what happened in the graveyard, and Harry says, 'I don't think I said anything about a graveyard, Professor.' It gave me chills when I saw it."

    10. When Seamus repeatedly blows everything up.

    Warner Bros.

"The gag with Seamus blowing stuff up in every single movie."

    carolinehorn25

    11. When Luna rescues Harry on the Hogwarts Express.

    Warner Bros.

"Instead of Tonks (like in the books), Luna finds immobile Harry under his Invisibility Cloak after Malfoy’s attack. Her iconic Spectrespecs sense Wrackspurts around Harry’s head. It's sweet the way Luna’s wackiness is what saves Harry. When Harry apologizes for missing the carriages, she responds how it’s fine because it 'feels like having a friend.' Harry says, 'I am your friend, Luna!' It's a sweet moment."

    12. When Professor McGonagall teaches Ron to dance.

    Warner Bros.

"The dancing lessons in Goblet of Fire make me laugh every time. It’s a great laugh amid a very serious plot, and Ron’s expression while dancing with Professor McGonagall is priceless!"

    katelyns4554f5bdf

    13. When Ron and Hermione engage in some cute but awkward flirting.

    Warner Bros.

"It's small, but I liked when Hermione and Ron touched hands during the Care of Magical Creatures lesson and when they were having some awkward flirting during their trip to Hogsmeade."

    michaelf452aeab55

"In Prisoner of Azkaban when Ron and Hermione are at the Shrieking Shack. She says, 'Should we move closer?' and Ron gets nervous thinking she means closer to each other. It gives a glimpse into the beginning of their romance."

    briannae413d4e1a4

    14. When Sirius comforts Harry in his time of need.

    Warner Bros.

"In Order of the Phoenix, Harry confides in Sirius and says he's scared he's becoming bad. Sirius tells him he's not a bad person, he's a very good person who bad things have happened to. It shows a very vulnerable moment, whereas in the book, Sirius shrugs it off as Harry just needing rest."

    15. When Dudley gets trapped in the snake enclosure.

    Warner Bros.

"I like in The Sorcerer's Stone when they're at the zoo. The glass disappears, and Dudley falls in the cage and gets trapped. In the books, the glass disappears, but Dudley doesn’t fall in. I know it isn’t a big difference, but I think it’s a really funny moment in the movies that gives Dudley what he deserves for bullying Harry, and it should have been in the books."

    nicole253

    16. When Harry snaps the Elder Wand in half.

    Warner Bros.

"Harry breaking the Elder Wand was beautiful. He knew the world would be better off without it. If it was broken, there would be no chance of anyone being seduced by its power."

    cupboardwitch

    17. When Hermione erases her parents' memory of her.

    Warner Bros.

"In Deathly Hallows Part 1, we see Hermione Obliviating her parents and her picture disappearing from the frames. It's such a beautiful scene with beautiful music. In the book, we know it happens, but it’s just mentioned. It was nice to see it play out — kicking things off with some emotion."

    morgann4c0d3fc7b

    18. When Dumbledore leads the clap during the ending of Chamber of Secrets.

    Warner Bros.

"When Hagrid returns from Azkaban, Dumbledore leads a poignant round of applause, and it leads to a wave of emotion with Hermione coming to tears. Since this is the last scene you see with Richard Harris as Dumbledore, I'm glad he leads the clap because it feels like his own personal stamp on the series before his departure."

    samjaques1994

    19. When Alan Rickman adds his own flair to Snape's character.

    Warner Bros.

"My husband’s favorite line that always gets me, too, is in The Half-Blood Prince when Snape tells Harry that Dumbledore is away. Then, when Harry asks where he’s gone, Snape just stares for a second and walks away. Alan Rickman was just *chef’s kiss*!"

    elizabethm458d5ac71

    20. When Ron questions Hermione's priorities in life.

    Warner Bros.

"I love in the first movie when Ron says, 'She needs to sort out her priorities' after Hermione says that expulsion is worse than death. It’s already a ridiculous moment in the books, but this line really elevates it to iconic status. Plus, it really boils down Ron as a character early on."

    deathlyhallows07

    21. When characters playfully hit each other in the head.

    Warner Bros.

"I love it when Hermione hits Harry in the head with a book after he says he's the Chosen One."

    carolynl4a60f6e3b

"When Snape repeatedly hits Harry and Ron in the head in Goblet of Fire. When he pulls up his sleeves, it’s pure comedy gold."

    polidominop

    22. When Professor McGonagall warns her students not to behave like baboons.

    Warner Bros.

"I love the part when Professor McGonagall says, 'I will not have you acting like a babbling bumbling band of baboons.' I just love the look on her face after she says that."

    simrat_mann

    23. When Harry says exactly what we're all thinking.

    Warner Bros.

"In The Goblet of Fire when Harry says, 'I love magic.'...Us too, Harry, us too."
