So, every now and then I like to check up on a few of my favorite nostalgia stars.
And today, my mind was clouded with memories of the original Degrassi: The Next Generation cast.
When I came across Sarah Barrable-Tishauer, better known as Liberty Van Zandt on the show, I was pleasantly caught by surprise...
...because she's a house music DJ now!
But despite my initial shock, Sarah seems to be right in her element. She calls this look the "Bass Face."
And it looks like I wasn't the only one taking a trip down memory lane, because the former actress recently caught up with Refinery29 to talk about her musical passion.
Sarah chose to explore the DJ life after friends continuously complimented her music mixes and choices. So, she bought some equipment and decided to learn the craft.
"On my birthday, a year ago, July 5th, I played my first show at a club in Toronto," she told Refinery29. "I absolutely loved it and I got such amazing feedback from people."
But that's not her only gig. Sarah works full-time as an account manager at a marketing agency.
Oh, did I forget to mention she graduated from Concordia University at the top 1% of her class with a degree in communication studies and marketing. Sarah was the 2012 valedictorian.
"You can probably imagine having a nine-to-five job and also DJing until 3 a.m. is kind of a difficult thing to balance, so I've just tried to keep my gigs on weekends and just a couple times of month because I just don't have a lot of time."
And Sarah isn't only focused on rocking the crowd. She also hopes to spread good vibes and promote inclusivity.
"The brand I’m trying to cultivate around Me Time has a lot to do with something that women can bring to this space. A perspective beyond testosterone-fueled parties that are often not safe-spaces for women and LGBTQ. I really want to expand to talk about self-care and self-love."
"Wherever I play, we’ll put up signs to call out that discrimination of any form is not tolerated. Too long have certain groups had to feel uncomfortable because the space was not ‘made for them’ or didn’t 'tolerate them.' We’re turning the tables."
But even though her time is being spent planning events and spinning beats, Sarah will never forget where she came from.
"Degrassi is the antithesis to shows more like The O.C. or 90210 where they're more glamorizing young people's lives and not talking about the very real and adult things that happen to young people. I know that I've had a lot of good responses where people are like, 'Thank you so much for talking about this.'"
