Historical novelist Sara Sheridan chooses her favourite rebellious women from history:
I’m drawn like a magnet to the stories of women I can find in archives. The records are far rarer than male material – for a long time, women didn’t own property and many were illiterate. A recent National Museum of Scotland exhibition on Mary Queen of Scots revealed much of the documentation surrounding her had been lost- and she was a Queen! For ordinary women, it was much easier to slip out of history, and sometimes I write female characters based on only one surviving line about a life. When I find something I get really excited - especially when the women are rebellious!
