Why Star Trek Discovery Still Sucks

Now that the second season of “Star Trek Discovery (STD)” is over, I have read a few articles and lists of why it is better than the first season, and even heard people saying it is a “good show.” To that, I politely disagree. Better than the first season isn’t saying much. If it didn’t have “Star Trek” in the title it might be good, but since it does it has to be compared to the rest of the “Star Trek” universe. So, here are the reasons STD still sucks.

1. Hologram Technology

In the Discovery and other ships, they have hologram technology that gets used for communications and other purposes that somehow doesn’t make it to any series that happens after STD in the timeline. They reference this a few times as Pike states how he doesn’t like it and doesn’t want to use it. But, they have established that it exists which means original series and TNG would have it to use, yet they do not use it in those series.

2. Easter Eggs

Every TV series or movie nowadays seems to cater to people who have nothing better to do with their time, than search the background for Easter Eggs. Can’t we just watch TV shows for the story anymore? Apparently not.

3. Klingons Appearance

When the first Klingon appeared in the original series, they looked similar to humans and the Klingon we would see later Once the movies started they developed a consistent look for the Klingons that lasted through The Next Generation and TNG movies. Yet, in STD they changed the look. Supposedly this will be explained at a later date in the series. However, this is probably only because of all the criticism they have received and will have to write something for it.

4. Klingons Speaking in Klingon

They established in the series that they have universal translators. Yet for each of the scenes with Klingons they are speaking Klingon, even is the scenes of Klingons speaking to each other they subtitle it. They didn’t do this when the crew went to Saru’s homeworld.

5. Spock’s Emotions

From the recent movies to STD, Spock has gone from a stoic character in control of his emotions to a whiny emotionally petty and irritating baby. They might have done this in STD because the JJ Abrams-produced movies have made him extra emotional as we and they wanted to copy that.

6. The Ever-Changing Look of The Enterprise

The bridge and the rest of the Enterprise seem to be more of an homage to the original. But the bridge, for example, doesn’t look like the actual bridge of the Enterprise. For the true Trekkie knows that the bridge that Captain Pike commanded, looked exactly like the bridge that Captain Kirk commanded. Also, in the last episode of the series, dozens of shuttles and little fighter craft come out of the shuttle bay on the Enterprise. But as per the original series, the shuttle bay was not that large.

7. Prequel Overload

My biggest pet-peeve is the fact that this is a prequel series, in the same way, the movies are prequels re-using old characters. One reason that The Next Generation lasted for 7 seasons is they took the series into the future. They created new characters, new storylines, which also helped explain the changes to technology. STD could have easily used the Klingon war storyline or a new species in the first season, and the red angel storyline in the second season in a series that takes place after TNG with Michael Burnham and Saru as new characters.
