Patriot$ To Be Haunted By Free Agency

A daily and analytical view of New England's losses to the free agency market.

Patriot$ To Be Haunted By Free Agency

As the old proverb says, "A team that stays together is a team that wins together."

Six seems to be the number that will tell all for the New England Patriots.

There are six days until Darrelle Revis' $25 million option has to be picked up. Then, fifty-six days until the kick-off of the NFL draft. Lastly, there are six months until the start of the 2015 National Football League season.

After learning that kicker Stephen Gostkowski received the sole franchise tag, questions have been trickling into the Patriots' roster.

For one, safety Devin McCourty is likely to be a free agent. With few safety prospects in the free agency, and even less available in the draft, McCourty stands as a prospect that has almost every team in the NFL wanting. While he has expressed keen interest to stay in New England, his opportunities will surely be vast. And as we all know, many opportunities means more than the 3.9 million he earned last year, a payday that New England may not agree to.

Darrelle Revis has always sought a high paycheck, whether it was in New York or Tampa Bay. He went to New England for a championship run and he got one. Now that he has a ring validating his elite career, does Revis go back to the highest bidder? With possible high offers from the Jets and the Bills, Revis will have to choose between a championship home in New England or an up-and-coming team with more money.

Two running backs, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, will also be in the free agency market. Unfortunately for them, it will be a crowded competition with names like DeMarco Murray and Mark Ingram Jr. Still, New England is notorious for under-paying RBs, almost ensuring that Vereen and Ridley will find a home somewhere else.

A team that stays together is a team that wins together, right? Now that the Patriots are to be scavenged be the hawks of free agency, how will they recover? Only time will tell.
