Under his watch a total of 47 workers died on the job. In 1906, Wormwood died and rumors swirled that employees allegedly fed him to the furnace as pay back for poor working conditions. Today, his ghost still supposedly [haunts the property](https://styleblueprint.com/birmingham/everyday/13-bone-chilling-haunted-places-alabama/) with more than 100 reports of paranormal incidents.

[Hotel Captain Cook](http://captaincook.com/) is allegedly [haunted](https://www.hauntedrooms.com/11-haunted-hotels-in-alaska) by the spirit of a woman dressed in white. Numerous guests have reported seeing her apparition, lights flickering, and doors slamming inside the [hotel’s bathroom](https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-haunted-places-in-america/35/), which is where she died.

William Moeur built the property in 1910 as a home for him and his wife, Mary. Since then, the building served as a boarding house and later became a [restaurant](http://www.caseymoores.com/). After his stay in [The Stanley Hotel](http://www.stanleyhotel.com/about.html)’s Room 217, Stephen King was inspired to write his horror novel, _The Shining_. Room 217 is known for unexplainable events and is one of the most requested rooms. It’s believed that the original builder, Freelan Oscar Stanley and his wife, Flora, [haunt](https://www.travelchannel.com/interests/haunted/articles/stanley-hotel) the grounds to this day. [Union Cemetery](https://roadtrippers.com/us/easton-ct/attractions/union-cemetery) is a graveyard dating back to the 17th century and one of the most haunted cemeteries in the US. Visitors have reported seeing the [apparition](https://www.ctpost.com/living/article/Connecticut-s-most-haunted-places-12318463.php#photo-5328947) of the White Lady, a spirit whose origins are unknown, roaming the grounds and sometimes diving in front of passing vehicles.

During the Civil War, it was occupied by the Union, and contained a prison for Confederate soldiers. [Legend](https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-haunted-places-in-america/34/) has it that the woman is actually Madame Pele, the Fire Goddess who created Hawaii.

Operating as a prison from 1872–1973, [Old Idaho Penitentiary](https://history.idaho.gov/oldpen) is now part of the Idaho State Historical Society. Previous inmates allegedly [haunt](https://roadtrippers.com/us/boise-id/attractions/old-idaho-penitentiary) this former prison with incidents including: strange noises, unexplainable whispers, random feelings of sadness, and getting touched when nobody is present. The prison was also featured on Travel Channel’s _Ghost Adventures_.

Gangster Al Capone had his headquarters on hotel property and guests have reported seeing his ghost near his former eighth floor suite.

[Villisca Ax Murder House](http://www.villiscaiowa.com/) is the scene of the unsolved murders of eight people, including two adults and six children, in June 1912. The house was restored to its original state after Darwin and Martha Linn purchased it in 1994. Visitors have [reported](https://www.prairieghosts.com/villisca.html) hearing supernatural voices, laughter of children, and moving objects inside the property.

[Waverly Hills Sanatorium](https://www.therealwaverlyhills.com/) was a treatment center for patients suffering from tuberculosis, which was an epidemic at the time. The sanatorium was in operation as a tuberculosis hospital until 1961 and remained [abandoned](https://www.therealwaverlyhills.com/about) until 2001. Guests have [reported](https://www.prairieghosts.com/waverly_tb.html) activity like eerie sounds, numerous spirit sightings, and phantom footsteps.

Lizzie was accused and later acquitted of the unsolved axe murders. Today, guests can stay overnight and possibly experience paranormal activity within the property.

Over the course of its history, the [Wabasha Street Caves](http://www.wabashastreetcaves.com/) served as sandstone caves, a mushroom farm, and later transformed into a Prohibition speakeasy and nightclub for gangsters. The [McRaven Tour Home](https://www.mcraventourhome.com/) was built over the course of three different time periods ranging from 1797–1849. Mary Elizabeth Howard, one of the most active ghosts on the property, died in 1836 during childbirth. Today, her [ghost](https://www.mcraventourhome.com/ghosts) reportedly plays pranks on guests, and her [apparition](https://www.mcraventourhome.com/history) has been spotted numerous times.

[Lemp Mansion](http://www.lempmansion.com/), originally built in 1868, is said to be haunted by members of the Lemp family who tragically died on the property. Reports of [hauntings](https://www.hauntedrooms.com/10-haunted-places-missouri) include footsteps, [orbs](https://www.legendsofamerica.com/mo-lempmansion/4/) showing up in photos, and the sound of knocking.

Originally built in 1863, [Boulder Hot Springs](http://www.boulderhotsprings.com/) is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman named Simone who died on the property. Security footage has even caught ghostly activity on camera.

One of those famous guests, Thomas James Wright, is said to [haunt](http://www.exstjames.com/paranormal-experiences) Room 18, which is not eligible for overnight stays for guests due to the high level of [paranormal activity](https://www.legendsofamerica.com/nm-stjameshotel/) inside the room.
