Kashmir Is In Trouble Again

Kashmir has been undergoing civil unrest for over 60 years now.

The unrest is a result of a decision made after the 1947 British partition, where their king at the time, Marahaja Hari Singh, chose to give Kashmir to India-- a decision that's led to different oppositions and three wars.

Following the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, Kashmir has been in severe turmoil for the past two months again. Here's whats been happening:

The state had been under strict curfew for weeks.

    2. Protest and riots have led to violent clashes between the Indian forces and civilians.

    3. 70 people have been killed in the past two months and over 1000 of youths, elderly, and adults have been injured in the clashes.

According to Newsweek, the Indian police reported a 1.3 million pellets were used on civilian protestors in just two months alone.

    5. Young children have also become victims of clashes and pellets.

    6. Doctors have expressed concerns about treating patients properly because the hospitals are overflowing and they are unable to use MRI scanners due to the pellets injuries.

    7. Kashmiri doctors have performed over 200 eye surgeries to try to remove pellets from civilians.

    8. Curfew restrictions have stopped businesses from making money.

    9. Separatist protestors are marching the streets for a Kashmiri freedom.

    10. Makeshift schools have been set up for children to attend.

    11. Kashmir had a complete information and media blackout to try and settle the unrest.

    12. Communication lines have also been cut.

Here's a recent and telling local newspaper cover.

Many people are sharing their frustrations about being unable to contact family members.

I've been trying to contact my parents in Srinagar for three days now but there's complete silence. I don't remember it being so grim.

Anyone near #hyderpora mushtaq colony Laloo #Srinagar whose mobile is working? Haven't been able to contact parents 4m a week #KashmirSiege

Very few major news organizations have been covering the fatal unrest.

Al Jazeera @AJEnglish the only mainstream news outlet showing interest in and constantly reporting on #Kashmir and #ChaloUna movements.

Twitter has been the only major online source for people to talk about the current situation of what's going on in Kashmir.

People have been tweeting photos of local headlines about the grave situation.

Lal Chowk in #Srinagar and the local newspapers filled with pictures of dead boys.
