Romney Gives Cash To A Poor Supporter

Amid accusations his wealth makes him out of touch with average Americans, the GOP candidate helps a woman in need. ABC News

Ruth Williams, 55, said she received a message from God to track down Mitt Romney.

“I was on the highway praying and said, ‘God just show me how to get [my] lights on,’ and I pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there,” said Williams, who has been unemployed since last October. “And then God said, ‘Follow the bus,’ and I followed the bus to the airport.”

Romney was arriving from New Hampshire on Wednesday when Ruth followed his campaign bus to the Columbia airport. His staff encouraged her to come to a rally later that evening, and that's where the candidate pulled out his wallet and gave her what money he had which, according to Romney aide was about $50 or $60.

Williams has been unemployed since last October. Not only did Romney give her money, but he introduced her to South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. It was also confirmed that South Carolina treasurer Curtis Loftis (a Romney supporter) gave Ms. Williams $150, which she said allowed her to pay her light bill.

She's been volunteering at Romney's campaign headquarters in Columbia since meeting him last week. “I’ve been working at his campaign office cleaning and just doing little things,” she said.
