34 Things For All Of Those Unexpected Problems That Come With A Dog

No one told you that your rescue dog was gonna eat their dinner in 30 seconds and then immediately throw it up on your carpet.

    1. A pet hair roller if you were fully expecting to deal with some shedding...but you weren't prepared for how much shedding dogs do...on everything. Roll it over your couch, bed, favorite blanket, you name it, and watch it lift the fur away. See, we can own nice things!!

Promising review: "I have a short-haired dog that sheds like no other. No amount of grooming can keep it at bay. She’s part of the fam and always goes on the couch. I have a couch that is a woven material and it literally collects attracts and holds onto any amount of dog hair it can. The ChomChom is such a life-saver. I quickly use it daily and the amount of hair I pull off the couch is unreal. I love that it isn’t wasteful and you don’t have a bunch of lint sheets to manage. This thing works so well! Put it in your cart immediately!" —Audrey Kon

    2. A creamy paw butter because, surprise, they get dry hands too. This balm moisturizes dry, cracked paws and snoots and is safe if licked or swallowed.

Promising review: "We live in Chicago and the winters are brutal on our black lab's paws. The salt and snow were cracking his pads and although our dog wasn't whining or showing any pain, there is no way that a crack in his pad felt good. We put this on his paws once a day and noticed an improvement. We would take him out to play fetch and apply it the second we came back inside while he was still tired and panting so that he wouldn't lick it all off. It worked well enough that we'll buy it again next winter." —Todd Snyder

Get it from Amazon for $8.99.

    3. A pet tag silencer to put an end to the grating jingle jangle of your dog's tags.

reviewer photo of the holder attached to two dog tags
same reviewer's photo of the back of the tag holder

Promising review: "If you hate listening to your pet's tags clink and jingle, save yourself the pain and just order this tag silencer, you will love it. My husband loathes the sound of clicking dog tags and would perpetually take our dogs collar off. This tag silencer has solved that issue. We keep three tags on our dogs collar: ID tag with contact info, rabies tag, and city license tag. All three fit with no issue and no jingle. There is definitely room for more tags. It is easy to attach to the collar and once it's on, you don't have to mess with it again (unless you add or take tags off obviously). This was the second one we purchased for our dog. The first one lasted roughly 2.5 years on a growing puppy. Our dog is pretty active so it survived lake swimming, hiking, rough play with other dogs, etc. It also survived hot summers and cold winters, but our dog prefers winters spent under a blanket next to the heater vent. We have recommend to family and friends and they all love it. I also work in a veterinary office and recommend it to clients who complain about the clinking of tags." —Work hard, play hard.

    4. A crate training toy so you can help your pupper be more comfortable in their crate. It's attaches to the crate's walls and is the perfect surface for a smear of peanut butter or a frozen treat they can lick or gnaw, which can help reduce their stress.

Promising review: "Our puppy loves this! We used it to lure her into her crate and be comfortable spending time in there. The licking is self-soothing, and it is great having something cold for her sore mouth while she is teething. She hasn’t been biting or chewing on it, but having something cold has stopped her from chewing up other items! We are also in a humid climate where the average temperatures have been in the high 90s and low 100s so having something cold to cool her off really helps. We purchased other similar items (like lick mats) but they have not worked nearly as well, and they don’t have a cover! The cover is key to being able to freeze this and keep it clean between uses." —LadyTodd

Get it from Amazon for $32+ (available in four colors).

    5. Some calming bites for high-strung and high-energy pets that are designed to comfort and soothe without causing drowsiness. Use them before a long car ride if you know travel winds up your dog. Or give them a chew after dinner to help settle them before bed and prevent some 11 p.m. living room zoomies.

Promising review: "We have two Great Dane puppies that get a burst of energy every day around 6 p.m. They run full speed through the house. We send them outside to play but it still doesn’t make them tired. We bought the calming treats and started giving them to the puppies around 6 p.m. and by 6:30 they were laying on the couch sleeping." —Smokey

Get it from Amazon for $21.97+ (available in five styles).

    6. A cleansing wrinkle cream that'll wash away tear stains and prevent moisture from building up in skin folds. This is especially useful for squishy-faced breeds — like Frenchies, bulldogs, and pugs — but long-haired breeds can also benefit too.

Promising review: "AMAZING!!! My baby has wrinkles on top of wrinkles. This product has saved him! He was rubbing his face so hard on things to scratch in between his wrinkles that his whole face would break out and get irritated and his tail pocket gets so yeasty, red, and irritated. I put this product in every little crevice he has. It is soooo amazing!! We don’t ever travel without it! I will forever buy this product. Lifesaver!" —Heather Erin

ScratchPad for Dogs is a small biz based in Atlanta.

Promising review: "Love this scratch pad! We adopted our dog almost a year ago and he's been terrified of clippers and grinders since day one. We've never been able to maintain his nails due to his super reactive anxiety around nail care. That's all changed since we got the Scratch Pad a few weeks ago! He took to it right away and his nails have shown significant improvement in just a few sessions!" —Kira Armajani

    8. breath-freshing spray for dogs because your pooch's breath is HOT AND STANKY but you know there's no way you're getting within 5 feet of them while holding a toothbrush.

Promising review: "It makes a noticeable difference. My puppy has stinky breath sometimes so I decided to try this. It is pretty easy to administer when he decides to be cooperative. It definitely helps to tone down the doggy breath and he seems to not mind the flavor either. All in all, worth the buy." —Jenna D

Get it from Amazon for $6.89.

    9. And a bag of oral hygiene sticks to loosen built-up plaque and tartar on your dog's teeth. They also contain hemp seed and fatty acids to help support your pooch's immune function and skin health.

Two dogs staring longingly at the stick treat

Promising review: "Both of my dogs love these sticks. They’re each about 14 pounds so I break the sticks in half before giving them to them. I have a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix and a hairy hairless Chinese Crested. The Maltese’s coat is so soft since starting him on the omega chews and sticks and the Chinese Crested’s skin and coat is amazingly soft (she’s partially hairless). I will continue to purchase these sticks; they are healthy for them too!!!" —Mrodz

    10. A slow feeder bowl so you can stop your dog from inhaling their meal in a minute flat. These ridged bowls can help improve digestion, reduce bloating, and encourage your dog's foraging skills to keep their mind active.

Promising review: "We adopted a sweet three-legged 50-pound Dutch shepherd from the Humane Society recently. Her former two homes were bad, and she had to fight for her food. Because of this, she has crazy food aggression and inhales her food in a regular bowl. A friend recommended this bowl to us and it is FAB-U-LOUS! We mix up some homemade dog food (wet) along with grain-free kibble and spread it around the bowl. Our girl takes FAR longer to eat now. I'm guessing around five to seven minutes? The bowl works best on a smooth, noncarpeted surface as it has grip on the bottom. This ensures that the bowl doesn't slide around. It is also heavy duty, durable plastic that can go in the dishwasher (if I hand clean it, I soak in soapy water and scour with kitchen scrubber). Great product! I highly recommend this bowl for your fur baby too." —Shan the Painter

Get it from Amazon for $6.35.

    11. A leakproof dog water bottle for keeping your pooch hydrated without wasting water. Hold down the button and tilt the bottle horizontally until water flows into the built-in bowl. Once Buddy has had his fill, the water will flow back into the bottle until he's thirsty again.

The water bottle also includes a sling rope and carabiner for clipping onto a bag or belt loop.

Promising review: "I love this item. Especially nice when I take my dog to the dog park...for some reason he doesn’t like drinking out of the communal dog bowl. The water flows into the cup area and back into the reservoir if the dog doesn’t drink it all...with a button to lock in the water. Perfect product." —J. Chevalier

Get it from Amazon for $14.99+ (available in three sizes and three colors).

    12. no-spill water bowl that'll prevent your pooch from splashing and slopping water all over your floor. Water flows only when your pet's tongue touches the floating disk in the center, and the sides are also raised to prevent water from spilling out if you were to accidentally bump the bowl.

Promising review: "TikTok made me buy it and I'm glad I did. I thought my fur baby would have had a hard time getting the hang of drinking but he caught on pretty fast. Worth the buy." —Leah L

Get it from Amazon for $15.99 (available in four colors).

    13. Some rear end wipes if your dog is boot-scootin' around the house, leaving a stinky trail in their wake. These cleansing wipes are great for putrid-smelling patooties, and they're gentle enough to use on the face too.

Vetnique was founded by veterinarian James Bascharon.

You should still talk to your vet to make sure that your dog's offensive odors are not a sign of any underlying health conditions!

Promising review: "My dog doesn't 'scoot,' but she is 13-years-old and doesn't have as much control of her back end as she used to, which sometimes results in accidents. I had been using baby wipes when she messed on herself, but they weren't very strong and her back end still smelled pretty bad. These wipes are super strong and completely neutralize the poo odor! I am very satisfied and will definitely buy again." —Rose

Get 75 wipes from Amazon for $12.59 (available in larger containers).

    14. A pill pocket treat because your dog can sniff out its medicine no matter how you try and hide it. It's a win-win here — you win because you no longer have to force a pill down their throat, and they win because they're getting a treat *and* their medicine.

Promising review: "First off, my pup LOVES peanut butter so when I saw these I knew it would work. Popping the pills inside the peanut butter pockets are the perfect disguise when making sure he takes his meds as he could smell the coating when trying to hide it in the kibble. I like to roll them into balls to eliminate the possibility of him separating it. And they work so well that I ordered another flavor. No more splitting the pills down or trying to find ways to hide them, this method is so much more simple. I recommend." —Stephanie

Get 30 pill pockets from Amazon for $9.48 (available in other flavors and in larger packs).

    15. An ear treatment to clean your poor pet's ears of buildup and prevent inflammation and irritation. These ear drops are designed to protect against a variety of fungal and bacterial infections, like yeast and staph infections.

Promising review: "My dog has had chronic ear infections for years now. Every other month or so she’d get an infection and $200 later we’d have meds from the vet who confirmed what we already knew. I finally decided to give an unprescribed treatment a try and it worked AMAZINGLY. Followed the instructions for a week, and her ear is completely healed! Much easier to pay $20 as opposed to $200 when you get the same results! I highly recommend." —Fromal16

Get it from Amazon for $23.79.

    16. An immunity-boosting allergy supplement so dogs with skin sensitivities can just exist without scratching themselves raw. These soft chews deliver a dose of probiotics and other nutrients to help improve immune function, aide digestion, promote healthy skin, and add shine to a dog's coat.

Promising review: "Absolutely the best product. It saved my itchy goldendoodle! We tried changing food, Benadryl, medicated shampoo, fish oil, everything you can imagine... nothing worked long-term. He was itching his face so badly he would make himself bleed. Had sores and scabs all over his face and neck. I bought these because they had good reviews and I was desperate. It changed his life! He no longer scratches AT ALL! His coat looks great and all of his sores are healed. He’s the happiest he’s been which makes me a very happy momma. He is also very picky and never eats treats... he eats these every time so that’s an added bonus!" —Darcie Nation

Get them from Amazon for $29.97.

    17. A treat-dispensing toy for pups who get up to no good when they're bored. This durable pouch holds treats, frozen snacks, smears of peanut butter, and kibble. You can even freeze the treats inside to prolong the fun! The curved bottom causes it to roll erratically, so your dog will have a blast chasing it every which way. Pop it in the dishwasher when it needs a cleaning and it's ready to go for the next time boredom strikes.

Promising review: "I’ve only used this twice but both times have been approximately 35-minute adventures for my dog. He’s a 1-year-old German Shepherd with lots of energy and strong jaws. He will give this 100% attention the entire time he is using it and even after he’s done he likes playing with it. Definitely worth the money! If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would!" —Lauren

Get it from Amazon for $19.95+ (available in two sizes and five colors).

    18. A Wobble Wag Giggle ball with an internal noisemaker and six pockets that'll finally — finally! — exhaust your dog's seemingly endless reserve of energy.

Promising review: "WE FOUND IT! A play ball that can stand up to our 14-week-old part black Lab, part shark. We have tried several toys that would stand up to the extremely sharp teeth. Nothing has worked for over 15 minutes of intensive play time. We heard about this ball from a fellow puppy owner and ordered immediately. Added bonus: She is exhausted after chasing this thing around, so naptime comes quickly." —james Bennett

Get it from Amazon for $14.97.

    19. A liquid tartar remover if your dog desperately needs their teeth cleaned but also won't let you near them with a toothbrush. (Think of it as doggy mouthwash!) Just add this to their water and you'll notice your dog's plaque and bad breath subside.

Reviewer photo of their dog with yellow canine teeth
The same dog's teeth looking bright and white

Promising review: "My dog's molars were turning black and he had a ton of build up on his canines. In the photo (above), just imagine everywhere you see slight yellow, instead covered in black and brown gunk and hard plaque. His gums were beginning to look inflamed. And, of course, his breath could kill a horse. After one week of constant use (a cap full for every bowl of water) you could see an obvious difference in tooth color. I was blown away. (Why can’t human mouthwash do such a good job on our teeth?) After three weeks, his molars were almost completely clean. After a couple months of use, the plaque on his canines was soft enough to brush some of it off, which was totally impossible before. Plaque covered the canine approximately 70%. Obviously that's no longer the case. Idk what insane solvent this is made of, but it keeps his gross mouth clean as a whistle. Now I don’t have to worry about my picky princess mutt losing his teeth because he can’t be bothered to chew anything." —BaconPancakes

    20. Or easy-to-use dental powder because all you do is sprinkle it in your pet's food to protect their teeth from plaque and to ward off bad breath. Each sprinkle is packed with probiotics and nutrients like zinc, taurine, cranberry powder, and vegetable fats to support gum health.

Before photo of a dog's yellow tooth and inflamed gum

Promising review: "My smaller dog unfortunately has pretty bad breath (not your typical dog breath, much worse). Brushing her teeth regularly helps somewhat alleviate the problem, as do dental foams and rinses, but nothing has worked as noticeably as this powder. She has no issues eating it (although, she'd eat anything) and it lasts a while considering that she only goes through one teaspoon a day. I would definitely recommend giving it a try if nothing else is working and medical reasons have been ruled out." —DG

    21. An anti-fungal antibacterial spray made with cooling aloe to treat a range of skin conditions, including allergies, cuts, hot spots, infections, rashes, and scrapes.

before photo of a chihuahua's red and irritated elbow skin
after photo of the same chihuahua's elbow, which is noticeably less red and inflamed

Promising review: "Works great — this (above) is after one spray! I have a mixed chihuahua with environmental allergies: She gets little bright red spots that are itchy. Her paws get red and itchy as well. I bought this and have been nothing but impressed! I’ve only had to spray on an affected spot once or twice and the next day there is noticeable improvement and relief of itchiness. So happy I found this for her." —Kim

    22. A portable paw cleaner so your floors aren't covered in muddy footprints after letting your dog inside. Inside the container are soft bristles that lift dirt and grime from the pads of your pup's feet — all you need to do is add water.

Reviewer dipping their dog's paw in the cleaner

Promising review: "This product is great. My puppy is a digger and we have red clay type dirt. It gets her paws clean fast and easily. So much better than having to get a bath every time she digs." —Mandi Bultman

Get it from Amazon for $15.06+ (available in three sizes and six colors).

    23. A set of mini combs for gently detangling the fur around your pet's eyes that's crusted with eye boogers. This stainless steel brush delicately picks out the goop so you don't have to touch it yourself.

Reviewer holding the comb showing the eye boogers it removed

Promising review: "My cockapoo had tear staining as a pup but as an adult he just gets that goop in the corner of his inner eyes. Sometimes I don’t catch the goop fast enough and it hardens in his muzzle. Even when I do, the goop is slimy and difficult to remove even with dog wipes. This tool is a miracle! Small, light weight and a good value for the price. Just one comb through and I got the sticky wet goop. A few more comb throughs and I found eye gunk that was buried in his muzzle. Most importantly, this comb removed the debris without causing any discomfort to my pooch. In fact, he seemed to enjoy it! Just look at the pictures." —Joanna

    24. A LickiMat that'll prevent your chonky pet from gobbling up their food (and their siblings' food) in a matter of minutes. Licking causes a release of endorphins, which can help ease your pet's anxiety and reduce destructive behaviors.

Promising review: "This is absolutely perfect for a first-time dog parent! The first few days are hard but at least you get a 15–50 minute break thanks to this thing! I just put a little bit of Greek yogurt on mine and let our little guy go to town. I just wish it would stick to walls/surfaces a little bit better." —BgJan120 reviews

    25. A "Did you feed the dog?" sign if Fido is taking advantage of confusion re: whether he was fed to trick you into giving him another scoop of kibble.

Promising review: "So simple to use! So effective at preventing double feeding or missed feeding of your dog, when no one in the house is running on the exact same schedule. If you forget to leave notes for other family members, or forget to tell when you see them, that the dog has or has not been fed, this is a lifesaver." —Pam Glinderman

    26. Door Buddy strap because your furry friend has crashed too many Monday morning meetings with your boss. It'll bar sneaky sniffers who have learned to open the door from entering rooms they're not supposed to enter — like the garage for their daily trip to the litter box for an afternoon snack. 🤢

Door Buddy is a small business started by the Johnson family, who needed a way to keep their 9-month-old away from the cat's food and litter box in the laundry room.

Promising review: "I love the Door Buddy! I found another use for it. The Door Buddy is also good for introducing a new cat into the household. I adopted a new kitten and my adult cat was outraged! I separated the kitten by putting him in the guest room. After a couple of days I used the Door Buddy to just crack the door open so my adult cat could safely sniff the new kitten. Every two days I adjusted the DB to allow the door to open a little more. In a week my adult cat was trying to play with the kitten through the door! This is a great product and so easy to set up and use. Thanks!" —A. Hill

    27. A broom for pet hair to loosen the fur trapped in your carpet. (Why is it that dog hair seems to be the *perfect* size for the vacuum to not pick it up?) It works just as well on wood and linoleum, with the rubber head working as a magnet to attract stray hairs. There's also a built-in squeegee for wiping up liquids or for cleaning glass. Plus, the handle extends from 36 to 60 inches so it can reach practically any mess.

Promising review: "I bought this broom based on the tons of great reviews and I am not disappointed. I love this broom! It is lightweight but sturdy. I have used it on tile floors and carpet and it does a great job of getting the pet hair, lint, and dirt. I like this so much better than our traditional push broom. It is very easy to clean after use just using my hand, unlike our old broom. It also has a telescoping handle so that you can adjust it to whatever height you need. There is also a squeegee for doing the house windows and the car windows. I highly recommend it." —Joyce V

Promising review: "Not a paid review! I love it, and if I could give more stars I would. It arrived today and I already used it on one of my dogs. The other ones are not sure about it yet. It’s really dummy proof; you can’t mess nothing up. I mean it’s perfect. You got everything you need to make your fur baby beautiful. It has every attachment you can think of for grooming and for yourself as well. So, I feel like if you have a pet this is a must have." —Emma

    29. hide-a-squirrel dog toy for the doggo who loses interest almost immediately. Your fur baby will spend hours rooting around the trunk for squirrels — and you'll finally have some time to yourself.

    Dog playing with the toy
German shepherd resting its head on the toy
Australian shepherd playing with the toy

Promising review: "My son's yorkie poo stays at my place a lot, mostly because I take him to a nearby university campus, where, well-trained as he is, I can let him off-lead and chase squirrels to his heart's content. He is obsessed with squirrels now, so we thought this would be a fun Christmas toy for him. We followed the advice of other reviewers and supervised to try to delay the death of all the squirrels. We let him play with the tree trunk after he had rooted out all the squirrels and tried to kill them, as a dog will do. He loves the tree trunk — so much so that he makes love to it every time we let him play with it. If we have guests, it's a floor show. He doesn't care. I'm not quite sure what to make of all this, but as long as it makes him happy." —PBH

Get it from Amazon for $7.48+ (available in four sizes and in a raccoon style).

    30. A bully stick holder that'll give you peace of mind when your four-legged friend is going to town on their pizzle stick. Not to scare y'all but it's not out of the realm of possibility for dogs to choke on stick treats, esp. when the treats splinter or when dogs chew them down to easily swallowable nubs. This gadget grips the treats tightly so you can feel confident letting your dog enjoy their treats out of sight without choking on the ends.

There are several sizes to choose from based on the width of the chew sticks you give your pet: small (for treats 1/2 inch to 3/4 inches), medium (5/8 inches to 7/8 inches), and large (3/4 inches to 1 1/8 inches).

Promising review: "We recently got a new puppy who loves to chew on everything (the table, my shoes, our other dogs, etc.). Once we discovered bully sticks, we thought we were home free, but then I started reading about all these horror stories where dogs swallow the last few inches of the bully stick. Sure enough, a few days later, I see one of my other dogs coughing while frantically making chewing motions. I ran over and luckily managed to fish out the last bit of bully just before it went down his throat. If this could happen to my older dog with 13 years of chewing experience, I knew it was just a matter of time before the puppy did the same thing. These are the greatest invention ever! They are sturdy and grip the stick like nobody's business when used according to the directions. (You have to twist the stick, people. Pay attention to the directions!) There are no parts that break off, and the shape is fun for the dogs. Plus, they're light enough that the dogs can carry them around in their mouth. If you give your dog any kind of chew stick, I cannot recommend these enough. We have three BullyGrips at the moment (one small and two medium) but we have four dogs, so we'll probably get one more. These are half the price of the competition and work so much better. We'll never use anything else again." —Mikara

    31. A car door protector if your pooch loves hanging their head out the window and catching a breeze but you hate the scratches their nails leave on leather.

the black protector on an interior car door side
reviewer photo of their dog's paws on the protector

Promising review: "Exceeded expectations in my 4Runner. Very satisfied customer. Bought this to protect the doors and especially the padded portions on the upper part of the rear doors on my 2006 4Runner. My 65-pound Golden Retriever puppy likes to put his paws on the door to look out, and his claws were creating permanent dents in the soft-touch plastic. Received in good condition, and the fabric is heavy duty. Secondarily, they match well in the gray interior. I was skeptical they would stay in place because the tabs that go in the window channels slid in easily and don't seem to 'lock' in the window channel. In use they work perfectly and don't move at all, even now that he is 65+ pounds. I am 100% happy with these after about a month of use, and they are holding up great with no signs of wear. Would buy again." —old john

    32. A plush Snuggle Puppy because your pupperino deserves their own furry companion. It's great for pups who are being crate-trained, plus it produces a heartbeat that anxious pooches may find soothing.

Promising review: "This puppy is amazing. We ordered it after our first two sleepless nights with our chocolate lab. He cried and whined and barked. He is now seven months and this thing is still his BFF. It has held up amazingly well. No holes and he chews and sucks on it daily. No other stuffed toy has lasted, but this one has. It’s dirty and well-loved and still has all stitching and stuffing intact." —L. Arm

    33. A chew-resistant plush toy to keep everyone happy. It has an ultrasonic squeaker that only your dog can hear = you can watch TV, do work, read a book, take a nap, etc. without the incessant high-pitched squeak of your pup nomming on their toy. And there's no stuffing inside so you won't need to clean gator guts!

Promising review: "I have an auditory processing disorder and that makes squeak toys very difficult for me. I always had to be very careful as to what toys my good girl could have. This has solved all the problems! The only sound I can hear is the air being pushed out and she goes nuts for it! Best of both worlds! If only all dog toys were like this!" —V. F.

Promising review: "When we first got our rescue dog he had extreme separation anxiety. The one time we tried to leave him alone behind a doggy gate, he broke through the gate and chewed a hole through our front door. Needless to say we never felt comfortable leaving him out of his crate setup whenever we had to leave home without him again. We would try for even a few minutes at a time and he would start scratching at the door. Two years later and I had been able to keep gradually increasing his alone time out of the crate bit by bit, but I never felt comfortable going past the lawn for more than 15 minutes. A friend recommended this device to me and I am so, so glad I finally decided to give it a try. I was able to leave my home with my dog out of crate FOR OVER AN HOUR. I actually went to the market a few blocks away and got a soda just for the heck of it. Whenever my dog started appearing to look nervous I could talk to him through the camera saying 'good boy, good waiting' and he would calm down. I don't even care about the subscription price, $6 a month is worth it for this. My door is intact. I have peace of mind. I know that now when it's just me and our dog alone, I can leave him at home out of crate to go run an errand or whatever. It might not seem like a big deal to most people but honestly this just amazing for my partner and I (and of course our dog!)" —Twin
