This one gets extra points for the great camera shot panning up to the treehouse while Bobbie Day sings "He rocks in the tree tops all day long /Hoppin' and a-boppin' and singing his song." The poker, the pop bottles and newspapers-- this is one well stocked hangout. Add in the secret knock and Stand By Me's treehouse is an instant classic.

The Sandlot

The ultimate kids sports movie-- because Bad News Bears didn't have a treehouse. Pulley systems, ladders, fireman's pole, s'mores, and and endless supply of Erector Set pieces make the Sandlot treehouse a kid's paradise. We just hope it survived that massive Retrieval Suction explosion in tact.

Earnest Scared Stupid

Earnest Scared Stupid manages to combine a haunted house, a tree house, and what appears to be the contents of the junkyard where baseballs go to die from The Sandlot. Who wouldn't want a treehouse equipped with a food cannon to rain pies and pizza down on your enemies? The only real drawback is that it's built on top of a troll burial ground. Minor problem. Still, it's better than no treehouse at all!

Blue Lagoon

If you can stop looking at Brooke Shields for five minutes, you might notice that she lives in this utterly fantastic treehouse. It was designed and built by two kids so there's lot of fun features like lofts and slides and multiple levels. It's basically a McDonalds PlayPlace for gorgeous teens on the cusp of adulthood.

It was a pretty primitive treehouse, but Jem and Dill loved it, and it drove Scout crazy. Who didn't feel bad for Scout when she said, "They spent days together in the tree house plotting and planning, calling me only when they needed a third party." The only thing worse than NOT having a treehouse of your own is knowing someone who has one and isn't inviting you up.

Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves

The Sherwood treehouse village in this movie was as amazing as Kevin Costner's English accent was terrible. It's also fun seeing Robin Hood's band of merry men building their tree houses over the course of the movie. That moment when he twirls Maid Marion back to solid ground with the rope contraption? Romantic. The bit where the Celts come (and you know they drink the blood of their dead!) and everyone bellows "to the trees!" Thrilling. The bit where Kevin Costner has to pull a Tarzan and go swinging from vines that are ON FIRE? Ultra cool.

Nim's Island

Even if your dad is Gerard Butler, it's no picnic when he disappears without a trace. But if you are going to get temporarily abandoned by your swashbuckling marine biologist parent, it's best to do it in this fabulous treehouse. Especially when Jodi Foster comes to check up on you.

The Simpsons

Bart's treehouse in The Simpsons is perhaps the pop culture treehouse with the longest continuous usage. After all, Bart's been ten for about 25 years. Plus the Simpson's Treehouse of Horror concept beat Earnest to the haunted treehouse troll palace thing by about three years. Once Bart's treehouse got the teahouse makeover it definitely became one of the best decorated treehouses on this list. Fancy!

Return of the Jedi

It would be remiss to leave the Ewoks off the list. Bright Tree Village on Endor has all the snazzy rope bridges, spiral staircases, swinging vines, and cuddling residents you could ask for. How much hippie architecture has this village inspired since the early 80s? It's hard to say, but this definitely made both tree houses and the Pacific Northwest...I mean Endor... seem amazing as a kid.

Tarzan Escapes

Tarzan Escapes and Swiss Family Robinson need to duke out who did treehouses better, West Side Story dance battle style. Sure, the Swiss Family Robinson had an elephant help them construct their home. But Tarzan has an elephant who runs an elevator! It also has running water, and an innovative feature the Robison family treehouse lacks-- a Cheetah-powered ceiling fan. All of this in 1935!

Hobbits living in hills, Dwarves living in mountains, Elves living in trees. Everyone is living everywhere but on solid ground! If you're up on your Tolkien linguistics you'll know that the structures particular to Lothlorien are called Telain and are built specifically in Mallorn trees. Don't call it a treehouse-- you might make the elves mad.
