16 Things That Annoy The Hell Out Of Grocery Store Cashiers

Yes, I know you only came in for two things

1. Flirting with me

Especially if I’m a 17 year old female and you’re a 50 year old man. There is never a time when this is okay. It creeps me out and it makes you look like a dick.

2. Telling me that you “just printed this $100 bill earlier”

This does not make you look cool. This makes you look like an asshole. Also, if I really wanted to be picky, I could refuse the sale, because you just admitted to fraud.

3. Throwing your money on the belt when I have my hand out

Just don’t. I’m not holding my hand out for my own enjoyment. Also, picking coins up off of the belt is time consuming.

4. Talking on the phone when you come through my line

I get it if it’s an emergency, and I can usually tell if is, but if you’re talking to your best friend about the newest episode of Teen Mom, chances are, the convo can wait. The transaction will go a lot smoother (and not to mention faster) if you put down the phone and talk to me. Also it’s rude.

5. Not cleaning your reusable bags

I hate bagging in reusable bags enough as it is, please don’t hand me a stained bag that smells like milk that expired a decade ago. It’s gross. Just wash the damn bags or let me bag in plastic and recycle the bags at the front of the store.

6. Leaving the hand baskets wherever you please

I can’t tell you how many times people just leave baskets in the middle of the floor at the end of the register. Either take them with you to the door, or hand them to me. If you leave them on the floor, it’s a huge safety hazard because someone could trip (and if someone trips over a basket you left on the floor at the end of my register, I’m the one who is going to get in trouble for it). I don’t have fifteen arms either, so if you cannot bring your basket back, ask me where you should put it. Usually cashiers have a place to put empty baskets until we get a minute to put them back.

7. Telling me that you hate the self check out machines when you’re the one who walked over here to use them

I get that you hate the self check out machines. Newsflash, everyone hates the self check out machines. Especially those of us that work at the store. But complaining and loudly telling me “I hate these things” will not make them work any better. 9 times out of 10, it’s not the machine that fucked up, it’s you. People like to take bags off of the scale before the end of the transaction, and I can’t tell you how many women come by and set their handbags down on the scale, and then look at me like I did something wrong when they get the “unexpected item in bagging area” message.

8. Getting all defensive when an item doesn't ring up at the correct price

More often than not, if you calmly tell me about the problem, I’ll be more than happy to override the price and help you fix it, but if you glare at me while slamming your fist on the counter and tell me that the chips were supposed to be 2/$5, chances are I’ll be a lot more reluctant to help you.

9. Asking me if we have any more of a super specific item in "the back"

Customers seem to think that “the back” is a magical land where we keep millions of items we don’t have room for on the shelves. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. We keep things people buy all the time like cases of water and 12 packs of soda in the back, and often we have extras, but if you want to know if we have any of your favorite gluten free organic trail mix in the back, we probably don’t. Again, if you ask me calmly and politely, I’ll be more than happy to radio someone to check for you and see if we have any more.

10. Ignoring me when I ask if you need help

At least once a day I’ll smile and say hello to a customer and they’ll yell back “JUST LOOKING”. Actually listen to what I’m saying to you.

11. Leaving me with your children

I’m not your babysitter. If you have to run all the way across the store to grab a loaf of bread, and your child is running all over the place ruining the displays and tearing things off of the shelves, please take them with you. It makes my job a lot easier, and I'll be able to ring you up a lot quicker.

12. Assuming I can read your mind

I’m a cashier. Not a mind reader. If you want something, you need to let me know. I can’t look into your eyes and just assume that you want your frozen items in a paper bag and the rest of your groceries in plastic, so unless you use your words, you’re probably not going to get what you want.

13. Asking me "Do you work here?"

14. Giving me a hard time when I ask to see your I.D.

At my store, the rule is we have to I.D those that look under 40. If I ask you for your I.D, just give it to me. Honestly, this whole process will go a hell of a lot faster if you just let me see it. You can tell me how old you are all you want, but without an I.D. in my hand, I legally cannot sell you alcohol or tobacco products. Also, if you give me any reason to think that you’re going to give the alcohol to someone who is underage, or that you’re going to drive drunk (or already are driving drunk) I can refuse the sale.

15. Leaving your shopping carts all over the parking lot

This is probably one of the biggest dick moves you could make while grocery shopping. Just put your cart back in the cart corral. It’s really not that hard. Don’t be that asshole.

16. Telling me how much your produce is when I’m trying to look up the code

I'm not stupid, I know what grapes look like, so loudly telling me "THEY'RE GRAPES AND THEY'RE .99 A POUND" doesn't help me unless you know the PLU for grapes. Calm down.
