“Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air”
-Sylvia Plath
Lady Lazarus
While this poem is about suicide (as are a lot of Plath's work) this line makes me feel like there is a redemption in getting through the hard side of depression. It makes me feel powerful…
The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Banks. Not just a great book but features my favorite short story written in second person narrative.
Eating the Cheshire Cat by Helen Ellis. I read it as a teen and it was the first book that really got into the neurosis of being a girl in a world that is not always kind.
I think this quote from the book sums it up. "The fundamental mistake I had always made—and that she had, in fairness, always led me to make—was this: Margo was not a miracle. She was not an adventure. She was not a fine and precious thing. She was a girl.”
