UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attended the September 21 march.

Ed McArdle, a Sierra Club volunteer from Michigan, said he lives "on the butt end of the tar sands," and is concerned about how the expansion of oil pipelines and fracking could affect drinking water, especially from the Great Lakes. A longtime anti-nuclear, anti-coal and anti-fracking advocate, McArdle praised marchers for showing that an adamant climate constituency exists, but acknowledged, "We've got our hands full."

The march began on Central Park West, then went south, and down Sixth Avenue, before turning west on 42nd Street through Times Square.
