Environmentally Healthy Farming

Most Tahitian pearl "farms" are in French Polynesia. In order for the oyster to survive and remain healthy enough to grow a pearl, the water must be clean and free of any pollutants or irritants to the oyster's health.

Since keeping an oyster healthy and free from environmental pollution can be hard, there is incentive for pearl farms to keep the waters clean, clear, and fresh.

The South Sea pearl mother--the oyster--is not thrown away or killed when the pearl is removed from the shell. In fact it takes very specially trained workers to remove the pearl without harming the oyster. Oysters can go on to grow pearls for many more years.

Fish Coexist

Pearl farming does not drive fish out from their homes--in fact reef fish live (and thrive!) with the oysters and occasionally clean them! Since no fishing is allowed near the oysters--these waters often become fish sanctuaries.
