Whether it's due to changed lives and lifestyles or just inane bureaucrats, there are more than a few stupid laws on the books in just about every part of the world. Thanks in part to the fact that it developed so quickly over a time during which the world rapidly changed, some of the sillier ones are in the United States. These are some of our favorites.

Wait for the Vehicle to Come to a Complete Stop

Glendale, California residents could find themselves making a stop at the cop shop before heading to the hospital if they get onto a moving vehicle. City law 10.64.010 reads, "No person shall board or alight from any vehicle while such vehicle is in motion." A leftover from the early days of cars, this law isn't particularly necessary in a world of vehicles that can easily go more than 100 MPH!

The Grass Isn't the Only Thing That's Blue in Kentucky

KRS 436.600 prohibits the sale, exchange, and display of rabbits and fowl that have been dyed. Much to the chagrin of Kentucky dying enthusiasts, you can't even legally give these animals away! Animal rights advocates may think that that's a good thing, but here's the real kicker: the law doesn't apply when six or more animals are sold together.

Don't Forget to Take Your Cold Medicine

Sneeze at a fair in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia and you could get stopped by the police. Sec. 3-5-2 prohibits people from making disturbing sounds at public meetings and places of amusement. The law is written so poorly that it could even apply to a baby crying. Even a couple hours away in Woodstock, lawyers might be surprised by the absurdity of this statute. But, in a country that also legislated that goldfish cannot be given away as an inducement to play a game at a carnivals, we shouldn't really be surprised by the ridiculousness.

Keep Your Trees Out of the Air's Way

Blairstown, New Jersey permits its residents to plant trees along the sides of public streets and highways, but they have to be careful when doing so. Section 171-2 says, "Such trees shall be planted so as not to obscure light and air..." No one likes to be stifled by an unruly tree, after all!

If You're Handicapped or Elderly, Avoid Sun Prairie

With with cold white stuff covering the Midwest, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin is not the place for anyone who has trouble shoveling. Unremoved snow and ice on private property is considered a "public [nuisance] affecting peace and safety" under Section 8.44.050. Fortunately, though, residents also have the choice of sprinkling it with ashes, sawdust, or sand, so seniors owning homes can stick to catching pneumonia rather than injuring their backs.
