This 1997 Film Has A Wonderful Political Easter Egg

Sam Neill is a very forward-thinking Aussie.

If you haven't already, you should really see the 1997 sci-fi film Event Horizon, starring Lawrence Fisburne and Sam Neill. It's a really great movie set in 2047 about a team of astronauts who fuck with the concept of space and time.

Anyway, Twitter user @davidlawrance picked up on the fact that Sam Neill's space suit has a flag patch that is very, very interesting: it's the Australian flag with the British union jack removed, and in its place is the Aboriginal flag.

Rewatching EVENT HORIZON & just noticed futuristic Australian flag on Weir's suit. Your own design @TwoPaddocks??

See, if you watch it closely, it turns out all the space crew have different patches that relate to where they're from. American actor Lawrence Fishburne has a US flag on his shoulder.

Then there's this flag patch that looks like the EU flag. According to a news article from 1997, the actors were encouraged to imagine what their characters would wear in 2047, so the British actors chose a "United Europe" design.

Therefore, Neill (who is actually from New Zealand, but puts on an Aussie accent for the movie) is reportedly rocking what he thought the Australian flag would look like in 2047.

There's been a debate raging for decades about the placement of the British union jack in the upper-left corner of the Aussie flag, with many Aboriginal people saying it's a symbol of oppression.
