17 Tips That Every Newbie Driver In Manila Should Know

    Basta bawal ang road rage!

Driving in Metro Manila is a major source of stress, because the streets are filled with so many unclear signages and drivers who brazenly break traffic laws. It's so easy to lose your mind, lalo na if you're a driving newbie.

Pero cool ka lang, because driving gets harder when you don't keep your emotions in check. Take it from me. Three years na akong nagda-drive but ngayon ko lang masasabi na confident na ako sa kalsada. In fact, I was so scared of driving during the first year that I rarely used my brand new car.

Eventually, I got the courage to drive through continuous practice and by listening to tips from my friends. Need the same help? Here are a few pointers:

    1. Start with a habit.

    2. Be comfortable.

    3. Eyes on the road.

    4. Bring a copy of your car's OR and CR.

    5. Always be wary of traffic signs.

Many traffic signs in the metro are hidden, too small or are just plain incomprehensible. Be alert and keep your eyes peeled, or you might be victimized by a fraudulent traffic enforcer if you miss it.

    6. Also be alert for signs that are painted on the road itself.

    7. Unsure? Just use Waze.

Waze isn't just for directions. The mobile app also helps you avoid traffic violations by telling you where you must position your car if you're on an unfamiliar road. Do you have to be on the right side of the road to avoid that must-turn-left lane? Waze will tell you.

    8. Waze can also warn you of hazards.

Waze can also warn you ahead of time of hazards in the road, like roads under construction, accidents, or other unique hazards like the one above.

    9. Learn number coding like your A-Ba-Ka-Da.

    10. Accidents are not art installations.

    11. Listen to your body.

    12. Be wary of the latest scams.

    13. Get a dashcam on day one.

    14. Be aware of PUVs that do not follow traffic rules.

The drivers of public utility vehicles like jeepneys, taxis and buses are usually more brazen in ignoring traffic rules because of the excuse that they have to do anything to earn money. Prevent yourself from getting into an accident with these vehicles by watching out for their usual sins, like:

    * turning left from the outer lane

    * nearly sideswiping your car just to squeeze into your lane

    * stopping in the middle of the road to take a passenger

    15. And be aware that PUVs usually get away with it.

    16. Don't let yourself be frustrated.

    17. Lastly, keep calm and enjoy yourself.
