Every decade has it’s list of movie greats, worsts, and mediocrity. Some movies have aged well though the years while others are a product of their time. This is not a list about movies that were great or bad. This is simply the movies that made the most money during the year 1999.

#10 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

To close out the 90's, Mike Myers surfaced one last time at the top of the box office with his very popular homage to James Bond. The first Austin Powers was a hit, but this outing far surpassed the original. Shame he could never outdo himself from here.

Winner of 5 Academy Awards, "American Beauty" captivated audiences and Hollywood alike.

#8 The World Is Not Enough

Bond takes the box office for the last time of the decade. Once again focusing more on action and less on espionage, the set pieces almost seemed to be geared more towards level designs for video games. Either way, this was a fairly well received Bond adventure and as always, James Bond will return.

#7 Notting Hill

If you've seen any of my previous countdowns for "Highest Grossing Movies" through the 90s, you should know that I am not a fan of Julia Roberts. If you don't know, well...I'm not a fan of Julia Roberts...at all. Why do I say this? Well, that's because I have nothing to say about this movie. I haven't seen it, I've heard nothing about it, therefore I know nothing about it. All I can say is...it's the seventh highest grossing movie of '97.

#6 The Mummy

Universal attempted to bring back some of their classic monsters. Leaving out most of the horror and putting in more adventure in comedy, this film struck a cord with audiences as it made enough money to earn two sequels, a spinoff with it's own sequels, and an animated series.

#5 Tarzan

Disney was coming near an end of hand drawn animation now that Disney/Pixar is making huge leaps forward. Although "Tarzan" and a few other hand drawn animated flicks that came out soon after "Tarzan" did fairly well, most didn't. CGI movies were the latest craze, and a preferred method for most filmmakers. Oh, and a big thank you goes to Phil Collins.

#4 The Matrix

This movie made a huge impact in pop culture. First the storytelling was well executed. The technological advancement amazed audiences. It also spawned two sequels, a spinoff, a making of documentary, popular soundtracks, collectables, and video games. Also, what it didn't mean to do was also spawn memes, parodies, and countless rip-offs. There is no denying, "The Matrix" was hugely popular for a little longer than 15 minutes.

#3 Toy Story 2

Proving that CGI movies were the preferred method, I give you exhibit A. This is one of the rare instances where the sequel is often regarded as being better than the original. With this, and two other hits under Disney/Pixar's belt, it seem they could do no wrong.

Ah yes, Bruce Willis again in the top tier of the box office. Before M. Night became notorious for silly scripts and poor execution, he delivered this epic plot twist of a movie on audiences. Admit it, you are really wanting to say that quote right now.

#1 Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

I know, I know...this is considered the bottom of the barrel for most Star Wars fans (myself included). The prequels are without question mediocre representations of the original trilogy. Of all of the prequels, this is the worst. However, an excuse to see Star Wars on the big screen, especially a NEW Star Wars movie is a big deal as evidence by the ton of money this movie made.
