10 Things Adoptees Don't Want To Hear Anymore

Just stop for our sake. Please.

1. "Shut up! You're adopted."

It's one of those comebacks that doesn't seem funny because it isn't. We might not have been cared for or wanted before, but we sure have a family now that really does. That's what counts, am I right?

2. "Do you want to find your REAL parents?"

Uhhhh. First off, all of you who don't know squat about how adoption or family works in general, let me break it down for you. Parents are people that actually have to take care of you, not pop you out of the womb and hand you off to someone else to nurture. Your real parents are the people who have loved you and raised you to be the person you are today, not by DNA. You all mean biological parents. Take note.

Secondly, some of us want to meet our birth parents because maybe it comes with the need for closure or just pure curiosity. It also could be that we don't care at all about them because honestly, our "real" parents have been the parents we have come to know and love and those are the only ones we need.

3. "Are you sad that you're adopted?"

Uh not really. Nah. No. Lots of us have been taken from poverty or people who couldn't take care of us. Now we have families who really wanted to have a child to love. Sounds like a win to me!

4. "You don't look adopted."

What does that even mean? You can usually pick out the ones who are? Please explain yourself.

5. "Oh, you're from _______. Why can't you speak the language?"

A lot of us left as babies. Also, a lot of the time, our parents don't speak that language. And if by chance our parents decided to enroll us in a language school on Saturday mornings, we didn't get as much out of it as we would have liked. We can do the basic "hello how are you?" and "thank you". The rest is over our heads.

6. "Oh you're not _______ because you're adopted."

This really applies to those adopted internationally. How would we not be Korean/Indian/Vietnamese/Portuguese/Kenyan etc. ? Excuse me, ignorant fools. Of course we are whatever ethnicity we were born as. The rest of our family members have nothing to do with that or where we grew up. Also, stop measuring how much of our ethnicity we encompass. That doesn't make us any less from our birth country.

7. "Why didn't your real parents want you?"

Firstly, please refer back to what was said about "real" parents.

Secondly, some of us know, some of us don't. Who really cares though? We're where we're supposed to be now.

8. "That's not your name."

Just because we don't look the part, doesn't mean it's not our name. It's a real treat when professors think you're trying to fill in for someone else for attendance but it's actually just you and your name coming to class.

9. "You should feel lucky that you have the family you do now."

Seriously what? Why is this even said? We're a family. We're lucky to have one another. End of story. Kids aren't a charity case, people.

10. "Wow, your parents don't look like you at all."
