More "Younger" Is On Its Way. And I'm Pretty Excited About It

TV Land ordered a second season of its new TV comedy with Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff. Here's why you should celebrate with me

At a moment when hip-hop's moguls, superheroes, and dragons dominate television, "Younger", a comedy from relatively small cable network TV Land, performed its own little magic. The 12-episode series, which debuted on March 31, stood out in the super crowded TV landscape, received solid reviews, and has been renewed for a second season today (hurrah!).

Granted, promoting the comedy as the new brainchild of "Sex and the City" and "Beverly Hills 90210" creator Darren Star helped gain the initial attention. After all, which woman doesn't want more girls nights out, kinky sex jokes, whirlwind romances, disastrous dating life, and workplace frenemies?

However, keeping America's eyeballs on a show takes more than a A-list producer these days (think about Michael J. Fox's comedy, for example). Audiences want top-quality, entertaining, and provocative content. And "Younger" has been surprisingly good at delivering all of this. Just to be clear: it's not the new "Sex and the City". It talks about women, friendship, career and love life (and yes, it's set in New York City). But that's it.

"Younger" is not just fresh and funny, it is also incredibly well-cast, starting from Sutton Foster, former "Bunheads" protagonist. In both shows, her characters face a life changing situation.

There, she played Michelle, a Las Vegas showgirl turned into a classical dance teacher. Here, she's Liza, a 40-year-old divorced mom who decides to get back on the job market. She soon finds out that experience and age don't look so good on resumes and lands a role at a publishing house as the assistant of the head of marketing by pretending she's 26.

It's hilarious to see Liza behaving like a twentysomething: she gets a new look (courtesy of her BFF Maggie, the amazing Debi Mazar, from "Entourage"), talks in #hashtags, falls for a hot tattoo artist of "her same age", and hangs out with her new co-worker, Kelsey, played by Hilary Duff, who's back after being out of the spotlight for years and turns out to be a pretty amazing addition to the cast.

Proving that aging actually has its pros, Duff has grown up from the times of "Lizzie McGuire", the Disney show that launched her career in 2001. Her character, Kelsey, is far from perfect but relatable and particularly fitting as Liza's "partner in crime". The couple delivers some of the funniest moments in the show, with Liza understanding 50% of what Kelsey says and Kelsey treating Liza like her 26-year old peer and complaining about how pathetic "lying on our age" is.

"Younger" is first and foremost a light comedy. But it's more than a guilty pleasure. It reflects on how technologies have led to a gap between generations that aren't able to communicate with one another. It shows Millennial viewers how superficial they can be, often too quick to judge and deride older people. Yet they get away with it, because knowing how to open a Twitter account these days counts more than 15 year of work experience.

Not every #hashtag has to be dumb, though, and female viewers in their 40s can use some advice from younger generations, as Liza learns. Like that it's never too late to start again, take a risk and be a little bold. After all, #YOLO.
