Words To Describe Life's More Baffling Moments (That Aren't "Insane")

A follow-up to "Stop Calling the Weather 'Bipolar,'" because words are hard.

Last month, we gave you some words to use to describe the weather other than "bipolar," because bipolar disorder has zero to do with rain and everything to do with a serious mental illness. In this month's edition, we've found words to describe weird/bemusing/astounding things that aren't "insane," because that dope AF three-pointer probably wasn't a symptom of a psychiatric disorder. Below are examples of people using the word "insane" incorrectly and lists of more appropriate words.

    1. Mother Jones

Donald Trump Just Gave the Most Insane Interview to NBC http://t.co/5YbTl3zQKR

Donald Trump is not a knowledgable (or tactful) man. Sometimes, he says things that leave us baffled, if not somewhat offended. Here are better words to describe the muck that leaves his mouth: absurd, preposterous, ridiculous, illogical, ludicrous, nonsensical, unreasonable, laughable. (Good ol' "stupid" works just fine, too).

    2. Taylor Swift

Back on the road! Insane crowd in Ottawa tonight! #1989TourOttawa

Here, Taylor's describing a show on her 1989 Tour. From the looks of her photo, the crowd was pretty enthusiastic. We doubt she means to call her fans mentally ill. Here are some better words, Tay: massive, exuberant, joyful, overwhelming, excited, great.

    3. NY Giants

You thought "The Catch" was insane? Watch these new Beckham one-handed catches! MUST WATCH: http://t.co/p6qgalI60H

OK, it looks like they're talking about some sort of sportz play. I'm not an expert on football, but I'm pretty sure psychosis is not part of the game. Here are some more accurate words: outstanding, unbelievable, incredible, phenomenal, beautiful, epic.

    4. GQ

Watch Carli Lloyd's insane World Cup goal from midfield here http://t.co/SsUDfkaeT5

Carli Lloyd's shot was glorious, wasn't it? But it didn't really have anything to do with psychiatric disorders, as far as I know. More appropriate descriptors might be: amazing, impressive, dramatic, remarkable, splendid, stellar, rad, dope.

    5. Seventeen

Is Pizza Chicken the Most Insane Thing KFC Has Ever Done? Probably. 😐 http://t.co/NjTD1FZhg6

OK, I'll admit –– this sounds incredibly disgusting and perhaps a crime against nature. But it's hardly a thing worth putting someone under an involuntary psychiatric hold. Here are some better words to describe this frankenfood: heinous, depraved, abhorrent, atrocious, revolting, outrageous.

    6. People

Is nothing scared anymore? This insane, star-shaped pizza blasphemes pizza everywhere http://t.co/6pRAx34kyU

Yikes –– more frankenfood. While this is apparently an epidemic, it's no cause for concern among psychiatric professionals. Try these words: despicable, repulsive, detestable, unsightly, foul.

    7. ESPN

"I'm way up, I feel blessed." Guy jumps off teammate's back for insane in-game dunk. WATCH: http://t.co/GOZDxKgDnh

Oooh, more sports. This is a weird play, but I doubt it's a symptom of a serious mental illness. A more fitting word might be: awesome, amazing, fascinating, stunning, surprising, wondrous.

    8. Men's Humor

Most insane game show ever. No translation needed. https://t.co/EA0u2YAg7S

While foreign game shows often baffle American viewers, as far as I know, they've never sent anyone into a psychotic break. Maybe try something like this: wild, unconventional, irresponsible, outlandish, offbeat, eccentric.

There you go, Internet. Now you have a richer vocabulary to describe things that don't equate "mentally ill" with "heinous," "incredible" or "bizarre."
