    The Crazy History Behind The Pronunciation Of "GIF"

    Caution: There are lots of GIFs in this post.

    We all know gifs!

    They're everywhere...

    Well, you may be familiar with the fiery debate...

    People get *very* angry about this stuff.

    Anyone who pronounces GIF as "jif" can physically fight me

    So, let's look at the history.

    It started way back in 1987 with Steve Wilhite.

    With the start of the internet, people started using them in their software!

    But there was one problem...

    There was literally a "Burn All the GIFs" Day in 1995.

    Like, this is a real picture.

    Fast forward to the birth of social media...GIFs are back!!

    But, there is still the debate of HOW TO PRONOUNCE GIF!

    1. Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries both say it can be pronounced either way.

    2. The creator of GIFs has weighed in.

    3. Most three-letter words that start with "g" have the hard "g" sound.

    Gab. Gad. Gag. Gal. Gam. Gap. Gas. Gay. Get. Gig. Gill. Gimp. Gird. Girl. Git! Give. Go. Goal. Gob. Gum. Gun. Gust. Gut. Guy.

    So basically, we have no idea.
