18 Reasons Potterheads Love Remus Lupin

10 points to J.K. Rowling for creating such an amazing character.

2. He was the only member of the Order always willing to give the underdog a chance.

Warner Bros.

"Severus made the Wolfsbane Potion for me every month, made it perfectly, so that I did not have to suffer as I usually do at the full moon. You are determined to hate him, Harry," said Lupin with a faint smile. "And I understand; with James as your father, with Sirius as your godfather, you have inherited an old prejudice."

3. He can voice disapproval with the mere action of raising his eyebrows.

Warner Bros

"Possibly no one's warned you, Lupin, but this class contains Neville Longbottom. I would advise you not to entrust him with anything difficult."

Professor Lupin raised his eyebrows. "I was hoping that Neville would assist me with the first stage of the operation," he said, "and I am sure he will perform admirably."

6. His reluctance to tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an unregistered Animagi with experience of breaking in and out of the castle could have led to disastrous consequences.

Warner Bros

"All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn't do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I had betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I'd led others along with me... and Dumbledore's trust has meant everything to me."

10. But even though he is the most grounded and serious, his insults are also unexpectedly brilliant.

Warner Bros

"Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business."

12. Lupin also has the most tragic plot arc, losing his four best friends in one night.

Warner Bros

Lupin went to bed on the night of the 31st October 1981 with four loving friends. By the morning, he had lost every single one.

13. He spent 12 years completely alone, hiding his condition of lycanthropy from the entire Wizarding World, and coming to terms with the fact the only other remaining Marauder was a traitor.

14. And two years after he got his friend Sirius back, he lost him again to the Killing Curse, but made Harry his priority.

Warner Bros

After Sirius was exonerated and subsequently murdered in The Order Of The Phoenix Lupin's first instinct was to protect Harry, despite having just lost his last remaining friend.

"There's nothing you can do, Harry... nothing... he's gone. He can't come back, Harry," said Lupin, his voice breaking as he struggled to contain Harry. "He can't come back, because he's d-"

15. He loved his wife deeply, even though his crippling self-doubt almost tore apart his marriage.

Warner Bros

"And I've told you a million times," said Lupin, refusing to meet her eyes, staring at the floor, "that I am too old for you, too poor....too dangerous. I am not being ridiculous," said Lupin steadily. "Tonks deserves somebody young and whole."

18. Because he always did the right thing in the end.

Warner Bros

"I am sorry too," said Lupin. "Sorry I will never know him – but he will know why I died and I hope he will understand. I was trying to make a world in which he could live a happier life."
