The Aussie Emu War Saga Is Continuing — With A Hollywood Movie Based On This Slice Of History

In a battle between emus and humans, history already knows who would win.

The Great Emu War, which, arguably, deserves to be Australia's most infamous war, is finally getting its time in the sun and will soon be coming to you on the big screen.

Just in case you haven't heard of this iconic moment in Australian history, here's a little refresher on what went down.

Fact is truly stranger — and greater — than fiction.

A bunch of Aussie veterans returned from World War I and in 1932, the government's act of thanks for their service was to gift them plots of land in Western Australia — with the idea that they'd be cultivated into productive farms.

Things started to go awry when an estimated 20,000 emus began their annual post-breeding migration journey towards the coast.

Turns out that the cleared land with its crops and water also made for good emu habitat — and so the emus moseyed on in and set up shop.

So the farmers and the government did the only thing they could do: declare war on a native, flightless big bird.

With the emus engaging in some genius-level guerrilla warfare and tactically-superior defence, the military offensive was called off barely a month later when the commander of the operation was recalled.

If you're thinking this is obviously fiction, let me assure you it isn't. The war is being turned into a Hollywood-backed satire movie and, honestly, of course it is.
