Broccoli Is Now 43% Less Pretentious Than Kale

A New York Times Magazine article this past weekend reflects on the overall pretentiousness of the vegetable kale and how broccoli is it's healthier, more down-to-earth cousin.

Kale has been in the limelight for months. Every restaurant in New York City is pushing kale to the top of its menus. Kale caesar salad, kale chips, seared chicken with lemon-rubbed kale, kale smoothies, you can even find a kale chocolate pudding. This weekend, The New York Times Magazine featured Broccoli as the "Dopest Vegetable". Its is re-staking its claim as the "coolest" vegetable. Per gram, broccoli has less calories (34 cal) and the same amount of fiber than kale (54 cal), making it healthier per bite. The healthy eater will argue that the higher the fiber, the lower the calories, the better. On average, it also costs less than kale. Broccoli is like that jealous younger sister, trying desperately to follow in the foot steps of its successful older sibling. It will be interesting to see if the public and restaurant owners fall for this "dope" vegetable. I'll certainly be on the lookout.
