What Graduation Really Feels Like

It's like finding a million dollars on the side walk but then realizing it's only counterfeit.

A few days leading up to graduation feels like the first day of ninth grade. Your heart beats a little faster when the date is mentioned and your head feels light. You're excited because everyone else around you is excited, but you are kind of freaked out too. When you tell people you are graduating, their faces light up like you just cured cancer and they squeal in excitement. And then you wonder why you aren't squealing in excitement.

When graduation day finally arrives, you are genuinely excited.You are on top of the world and you can't help but feel proud of yourself. You did it, you really did it! You survived.

Soon, the high wears off. You are left with just your thoughts and an empty apartment. And you're moving back home soon. Crap. You are now the same you, just with a new diploma and maybe a few glasses of wine.

Feeling lonely and emotionally distraught, you start reminiscing about better moments. Time for a quick facebook stalking session people! As you scroll through your billion and one albums, you can't help but get choked up. The craziest, and most exciting four years of your life have gone by in a flash. Cue the tissues and the taste of your own salty tears.

So now what? What will you do after college? Where are you going in life? What are you going to do with your degree? Those are just some of the questions you will receive at your graduation party. And let me tell you, it ain't gonna pretty unless you already have your whole life figured out. And in that case, why are you even reading this? Your graduation party will be a lot less painful with good friends and some alcohol. Be on the lookout for adults who will tackle you with their interrogations.

After all of that wine and suffering from post grad questions, you will most likely still be feeling down. But, it's normal to feel scared and anxious about the future isn't it? I'm not ashamed to say that I don't have my life together and it's been a week since I graduated. So, do me a favor and take a deep breath. You are young, alive and have a bright bright future ahead of you.

Give yourself a pat on the back because you honestly have earned it.
