People Are Sharing Stuff That Rich People Ruined Forever, And It's A Real Conversation-Starter

"The wealthy used to build public works, fund exploration, fund the arts. The only thing rich people do these days is hover up more resources so the make-believe number in the bank that they've attached to their sense of self keeps going up."

Listen, people are always opinionated about the rich. And there are plenty of things that people think rich people just straight up ruined completely.

U/ElPolloPayaso recently asked the people of Reddit, "What was ruined by rich people?" Maybe you'll end up agreeing with a few of these:

    1. "Burning Man."

    2. "Lobster — the cockroaches of the sea."

    3. "Oxtail — and it's only recently become in demand. It used to be poor peoples' food, the part of the cow no one wanted to eat. I'm in my 40s and remember that as a kid, for big family dinners, there was always a huge pot of oxtail stew full of meat because it was so dirt cheap. Pile your plate high and get seconds. Then it was discovered how similar it is to osso buco, but at a stupid cheap price. Supply and demand drove the price way up. I tried to look up historical prices and saw that only five years ago it was $9/pound. Now, it's around $15/pound. My big sister says she remembers buying it as a teen, and it was maybe $2/pound."

    4. "The housing market."

    —u/Hefty-Enthusiasm-353

    5. "Pickup trucks. They used to be considerably cheaper and driven only by farmers."

    —u/NCBadAsp

    6. "The retro games market."

    —u/GroovyRasputin

    7. "Thrift stores."

    —u/Angel-_-

    8. "Earth."

    —u/stuloch

    9. "Concerts and music festivals. I went to concerts, and big ones, with my own money in high school and college. It wasn’t cheap, but it was something kids could save up for and people just went. Food and drinks were just basic event fare. Now I’m straight up not sure how people who aren’t well off go to concerts. It wasn’t an influencer VIP event like it is now."

    10. "Views. They bribe, steal, and buy property all over the world that sits on the best views on the planet. It pisses me off that there are some things I’ll never get to see because some jackass bribed a zoning guy so he could build his eighth house on yet another cliff."

    11. "Being rich. The wealthy used to build public works, fund exploration, fund the arts. The only thing rich people do these days is hover up more resources so the make-believe number in the bank that they've attached to their sense of self keeps going up."

    —u/shaidyn

    12. "Cheap Asian food. Stuff like pho and Hong Kong BBQ used to be super casual. You could get a nice cheap meal for $5. Then all these bougie foodies came along, so now I have to pay three times the price for the 'atmosphere.'"

    —u/Dances28

    13. "Car prices. Only rich people and dummies are willing to pay $20,000 over MSRP for a Ford Bronco, let alone higher-end stuff. Car production is no longer hindered by COVID, there's no low inventory, so quit being idiots."

    —u/earic23

    14. "Camping."

    —u/newlife201764

    15. "The Florida Keys. It was laid-back and easy-going, and now it's just like the rest!"

    —u/Riverside63

    16. "As a touring artist, I went from years living in hotels to Airbnb saving the day, For some years, I LIVED in Airbnbs. Now it's back to hotels. They shouldn't have allowed investors to plunk 40 properties at a time on Airbnb. They shouldn't have allowed for Airbnb to become the career of some people besides B&B owners."

    —u/Tyrann0saurus_Rex

    17. "Artwork. They buy it all up so that the public can't enjoy it."

    —u/sameeker1

    18. "Video games."

    —u/devil652_

    19. "Owning a really nice leather jacket that was found for cheaper than it should've been at a secondhand store. Now, all these influencers have massive, expensive, shitty-looking leather trench coats"

    —u/cantsayididnttryy

    20. "Yoga. Rich white women with 'Namaste, bitches!' t-shirts bastardizing an ancient spiritual practice so they can look bendy on Instagram."
