Here's How Five Different Matte Lipsticks Hold Up All Day Long

    Our lips may have felt dry, but they looked fabulous AF.

    Hi, we're Macey, Sheridan, Lara, Nina, and Greta — and we love lipstick.

    But we REALLY love lipstick that stays on and doesn't let us down. So we decided to try out five different kinds of lipstick for a day and see how they held up.

    The Rules:

    # We all would apply at the same time. (9 a.m.)

    # We would all eat the same thing for lunch to make sure we wouldn't skew results between a hard-to-eat burrito and easy-to-chomp sushi.

    # And we would keep track of how many times we each had to reapply.

    Macey: Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Damned Black Cherry ($20)

    Macey's thoughts going into this: I usually only wear matte MAC lipsticks, so trying Kat Von D's liquid lipstick was a totally different experience. Applying it was the hardest part for me, since I've gotten used to perfecting the shape with the lipstick itself or lip brushes with other products — it's also not a forgiving color, so it was hard to fix once it was applied. At first it went on a little patchy, but it smoothed out eventually.

    Macey's thoughts during: It held up pretty well on the outer edges of my mouth, but any area that touched glasses/food/straws, etc., came off completely in little flakes. Of course this can be fixed by reapplying, which I only did once throughout the entire day. It was drying and felt annoying at times, but it wasn't visibly flaky — and that's without lip scrub/gloss/primer!

    As you can see, Macey's color got all over her keyboard...

    Sheridan: ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Limbo ($6)

    Sheridan's thoughts going into this: I'm the kind of girl who loves lipstick, but unfortunately it does not always love me back. It usually makes my lips feel chapped and gets on my teeth. So I was apprehensive about this, to say the least.

    Sheridan's thoughts during: I'm loving this color almost as much as I love fantasizing about Gerard Butler and Jake Gyllenhaal asking me to be in a relationship with them. The color is fierce, and though it's a bit dry, I'm really digging it. Usually I'm obsessed with lip balm causing my lips to feel slippery all the time. However, I didn't use lip balm this time after application, and the color really, really held up through meals, drinks, and blowing my nose. I only reapplied once during the day!

    Lara: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Ricco ($24)

    Lara's thoughts going into this: I LOVE MATTE LIPS! I love dark lip colors. And I love not having to reapply every 20 minutes, so I was super happy to try this "stay all day" formula. I don't wear lipstick as often as I'd like because it requires quite a bit of maintenance and I'm lazy, so I was hoping Stila would be my miracle.

    Lara's thoughts during: OK, this lipstick is so dry. So, so dry. I'm talking Thanksgiving turkey dry. But whenever I checked the status of my lips throughout the day, it didn't look dry at all. In fact, it looked fucking flawless. So even though I was constantly worried all day about how flaky it probably looked, I actually had nothing to worry about. I loved how I looked wearing this lipstick, and it only got on my teeth once and I only needed to reapply ONCE...at 2 p.m.!

    Nina: Kylie Cosmetics in True Brown K ($29)

    Nina's thoughts going into this: I love to wear lipstick nowadays, but I’m kind of bad about it. I eat carelessly and lick my lips, so I usually end the day with a patchy mess on my lips instead of a cool bold swatch. However, I was excited to try Kylie's lip kit because the color is dark and sultry, just like my soul.

    Nina's thoughts during: In terms of pigmentation, it goes on really well; you only need a couple swipes to get the full color on your lips. Unfortunately, my lips looked and felt like the Sahara desert while wearing Kylie's lip kit, but it's nothing a quick and light reapplication can't fix.

    I was amazed at how well it held up against food and drinks. I wasn't even trying to eat delicately. Sure, it lost a little pigment in the center of my lips, but it just gave me a chance to show off to the world that I was using ~Kylie's~ lip kit because I'M FANCY. I think I only needed three reapplications throughout the day.

    Greta: Lashed by Blac Chyna in Haute Cocoa ($11.99)

    Greta's thoughts going into this: As someone who always wears red lipstick, I felt like I lost my personal spark using this light brown color, although it's a pretty natural tone if you're into brownish lip stains or you just want to wear something semi-nude on your lips. It's super creamy, which is nice because it makes you feel hydrated.

    Greta's thoughts during: This lipstick has a dark side, in that it faded completely after lunch and left a mark on my cup of coffee, another one on my bottle of water and on pretty much everything my lips touched. I reapplied two times...but after that I was so sad with the results that I gave up.

    Greta's coffee cup couldn't survive her lips.

    Here's how the lipsticks worked:

    Macey (Kat Von D): I would definitely wear this again, and I would definitely recommend it over other products I've tried. Next time I would properly scrub/prime/prep my lips beforehand, but otherwise this was great. I give this lipstick a 9/10.

    Sheridan (ColourPop): Hell yes, I would definitely wear this again. I just have to get used to my lips feeling dry. I wish it were more hydrating, but honestly I've never found a lipstick that stays put as well as this one. I will now be able to go out at night without the worry of smudging, getting that shit on my teeth, and constant touch-ups. Yay! I give this lipstick a 9/10.

    Lara (Stila): I would definitely wear this baby again, because it stayed on like a damn monster. It was insane. Plus I think it looked cool as hell. I give this a 10/10.

    Nina (Kylie Cosmetics): I would definitely wear this again. This formula is legit. Probably because it's secretly ColourPop, wink wink. But nonetheless, it holds up really well throughout the day. Also it smells good, like a Lip Smacker. If you have the cash to drop on this lip kit, it's worth the buy, IMO. I give it an 8/10.

    Greta (Lashed Bar): I would only use this again if I'm in a hurry and I need something simple and easy to apply on my lips. But it won't stay on your lips. If you're not going to eat or drink ANYTHING during the day, like if you were a mannequin, then I'd recommend it. \_(ツ)_/¯ I give this lipstick a 4.5/10.
