Anti-Marriage Equality Groups Says Trump Win Means Aussie Polls Are Wrong

"Aussie 'gay marriage' polls are not to be trusted!"

An Australian anti-marriage equality group says Donald Trump's unexpected victory in the US presidential election shows polling on same-sex marriage in Australia is wrong.

Family Voice Australia wrote on Facebook that the Trump victory means polls showing a majority of Australians are in favour of same-sex marriage could be wrong.

"Massive USA polling swing shows Aussie 'gay marriage' polls are not to be trusted!" the post read.

The post also lauded incoming vice president Mike Pence, describing him as "a strong pro-life Christian conservative". Pence has a voting record against protections for LGBT people and same-sex marriage.

On Monday this week, Australia's upper house voted down the government's proposal to hold a national plebiscite on marriage.

Many anti-marriage equality groups, who supported the plebiscite, have suggested the real reason behind the LGBT community's opposition to the national vote is a fear that it will not pass.

Lyle Shelton, managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby, said Trump's rise is an example of people reacting against "political elites telling them what they have to believe and the use of political correctness to silence discussion".

"As recently as this week we saw Australian senators talking down to ordinary people saying that those who supported man-woman marriage were ‘haters’, a ‘vicious rump’ and a ‘rabid right’," he said.

"People who have valid concerns on a range of issues are tired of this sort of condescending treatment by the political class and they have risen up in America."

Shelton added he wished that the reaction "didn't have to happen this way", and labelled Trump a "deeply flawed leader".
