10 Children's Books That Will Make 90's Kids Nostalgic

This is a list of books that will remind 90's kids of the good old days of listening to soothing bedtime stories that helped them blissfully fall asleep. Also, it will remind them of the epic tales they read in elementary school.

1. The BFG by Roald Dahl

The BFG is a classic children's story that most 90's kids remember reading in early elementary school. In this whimsical Roald Dahl book, a young orphaned girl, Sophie is swept up in the middle of the night by a giant. This is no ordinary giant though, he is the BFG, the Big Friendly Giant. The BFG and Sophie unite together against the human eating giants and form a strong bond. With silly words like "snozzcumber", this book is perfect for young children to read.

2. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz

Most 90's kids will remember this book as a slumber party necessity. This is a book that made most kids fear that they would dig up a toe in their backyard and have a creepy character beg for their toe in the middle of the night. Most of all, the pop out aspects of this book are enough to make you jump out of your seat screaming. Even though 90's kids are older and shouldn't be afraid of these "mild" scary stories, we can admit that reading these stories still gives us the heebie jeebies.

3. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Three orphaned siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire move in with their Uncle, Count Olaf. What could go wrong? All 90's kids know the answer to that question, everything. The misfortunes and adventures of the Baudelaire children was a topic of conversation for most 90's kids back in the day. "Can you believe that Count Olaf..." "No! I haven't gotten to that part yet!"

4. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein

This conglomeration of wonderfully written and clever poems by Shel Silverstein was on most, if not all 90's kids childhood bookshelves. This book requires being read aloud, because of the fun exchanges in the text. 90's kids feared their babysitter after reading "Babysitter" because that babysitter actually sat on children.

5. Goosebumps by R.L Stine

A 90's kids favorite series of horrifying stories about ventriloquist dummies, dolls, giant blobs, mummies, haunted houses, and ghosts. Most books had alternate endings that the reader had the freedom to choose from, which is every young reader's dream. I remember running to the media center in elementary school to get one of the Goosebumps books before they were snatched off of the shelves by my classmates.

6. The Arthur Books by Marc Brown

Arthur is a classic in 90's kids literature. "Arthur in a Pickle" in particular was my favorite Arthur book. I remember asking my Dad to re-read this book to me every night when I was 5 or 6. These books are cleverly written and include absurdly hilarious concepts like everything turning into a pickle, which is comedic gold for children.

7. Miss Nelson is Missing! by James Marshall

Most 90's kids will remember the sinking feeling in their stomachs when they found out that they had a substitute teacher and feared that he/she might be like Ms. Viola Swamp. This clever story taught all 90's kids to treat their substitute teacher just as sweetly as their regular teacher.

These books played up to every 90's kids daydreams of their teachers, librarians, principals, and janitors. I was never a fan of gym class, so "The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon" holds a special place in my heart. In each book, the teachers are presented as monsters and make students do ridiculous tasks in class, like standing between two boards for a posture test in gym class. Imagination is the key to these books and if there's anything that 90's kids have plenty of, it's imagination.

9. Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss

Most 90's kids will remember this book as the farewell elementary school book. This book signaled a giant step and transition to middle school. This story assured children that they are soaring to new heights and are moving on to bigger and better things. Also, it taught 90's kids that failure will happen because it's a part of life, and those failures won't dictate their lives.

10. Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

And to top it all off, most 90's kids will appreciate the beauty of this sweet story. This is a story that I hold near and dear to my heart, because my mother read this book to me when I was a little girl. Nutbrown Hare communicated the depth and love she has for her baby hare through her long outstretched arms. If this story doesn't make 90's kids nostalgic, then I don't know what story will.
