Super Sweet Or Oh-So-Corny? 13 Indicators Of Rom-Coms

Romantic comedies are often so full of cliches that you find yourself rolling your eyes or face-palming where you should be smiling and gushing at the antics of Adams, Aniston, Bullock, Heigl, Hudson or Witherspoon. Here are a few key traits of Rom-Coms below. How many more can you think of?

    1. The movie opens with an establishing shot of the Manhattan/San Francisco/Los Angeles skyline accompanied by a Top 40 radio hit.

    2. Despite a healthy population of single people, the characters continually run into each other.

    3. They live in a happening city, yet exhibit their small-town mentalities by frequenting the same lame bar/café on a daily basis.

    4. Someone walks in on them making out, because nobody ever locks their doors before removing their clothing.

    5. The protagonists have quirky, far less attractive BFFs.

    6. A character tastes the marinara sauce cooking on the stove and then sticks the ladle back in the pot without first cleaning off any saliva.

    7. There’s no such thing as morning breath (unbrushed teeth!). Still-in-bed early morning kissing is considered romantic.

    8. Women commute in heels all day, and even wear them inside their own apartments.

    9. A spectacled person is surprised by something they see and removes their prescription glasses to take a better look. Sometimes the frames don’t even contain lenses.

    10. Noone ever goes to the bathroom to pee, only to take a shower/bubble bath or to talk to themselves in the mirror.

    11. When there’s an important broadcast news bulletin integral to the story, the character turns off the TV mid-way instead of watching the entire report.

    12. Cellphones or no cellphones, there’s always a mad dash at the end of the movie (most of the time to the airport) that culminates in a kiss.

    13. Closing credits are accompanied by outtakes or contrived amusing moments from the romantic leads’ inevitable wedding/honeymoon/childbirth.

And yet, we keep on watching...
