A Russian Perspective On Recent Events

    One more view on Brexit

Let me share some of my thoughts about ‪#‎Brexit‬# inspired by reading many most interesting posts and comments of a curiously similar content. I feel like I should say something clever about it too, yet I'll try to be more original here:)

Many remain supporters seem to be missing the whole point there, which stems from the general misunderstanding about the goal and the outcomes of the in/out vote. It's first of all a long-term political decision. When the EU was only established, it was an economic union of the STRONGEST European powers, such as Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg.

However, it's high time we recognized that the heyday of the EU is long past its' prime. It was wonderful in the beginning, but as it started uncontrollably expanding at cost of its' own efficiency, more and more Europeans started questing where the f**k this already bulky mechanism is going.. It wouldn't be unthinkable to compare this mechanism to the USSR that suffered from its' own unsustainable expansion (sure, it's not the only reason, but it served as a cause for many other problems that followed). It's only natural, since it gets so hard to rule something huge and especially if this something consists of 28 (currently, the number might increase anytime soon) such DIFFERENT countries. I mean really - Britain and Bulgaria, what do you have in common... For the union to be successful it needs to be made up of as many EQUAL participants as possible, which implies they should be: 1) equally strong economically 2) share similar political culture 3) have similarly effective institutions. The same goes for people: how many successful marriages of partners from different social and economic backgrounds can you name? Okay, the Norwegian royalty doesn't count, they are such bizarre sausages anyway😂. So I mean alliances that genuinely work, not like some gold-diggers sucking into their richer partner's wealth. The same applies to countries in general. Now we can witness how ugly this Union is becoming day after day, how torn the countries are between what they need and what Brussels promotes. The EU is simply overcrowded, it's getting harder for each country to make itself heard.

Apparently Britain turned out to be the first country (yet again!) to openly show dissatisfaction with the suffocating European dream. But they are not the only one. It's in the air all over Europe now. Many of Europeans feel like their needs are being ignored while the European fat cats keep playing their political games behind closed doors. To cut it short, this is an important political decision, that is likely to benefit Britain IN THE LONG TERM. Sure, things might not go smooth straight after the leave, since any change makes investors panic and withdraw their bucks. But it'll all even out, since Britain is strong and will always be with or without Europe! ‪#‎becauseitsbritain‬#. P.S. Guys, you're real pussies panicking over an 8% drop in the pound against the dollar. It's not nearly the 50% drop that we Russians experienced after the plunge of the oil prices and the Crimea stuff... Yet we're still safe and sound and love Mr Putin like never before😂 So it's time you showed your celebrated stiff upper lip one more time!

Moreover, it's not exactly fair to picture leave supporters as either old bags, benefit-claimants or downright racists...it's very convenient of course, but it doesn't make this point of view any less preposterous. I personally know quite a few respectable, self-sufficient, mostly middle-aged Brits, who take the whole European project with a pinch of salt and show a healthy conservatism towards the politics on the continent. Maybe this is exactly what Britain needs right now? Just a calm, low-key approach to the whole European hysteria, keeping the distance from all the turmoil happening on the continent.

What is more, we can now witness all sorts of articles with loud titles like "Why British passport is virtually worthless now" or jokes about the next James Bond film, when he's stuck for 2 hours in passport control at De Gaulle.. These are exact kinds of empty threats that have been directed at the British for too long. It's common knowledge that the freedom of movement is achieved by special agreements between the countries (as you know neither Switzerland nor Norway are in the EU and yet enjoy the freedom of movement). Sure, the arrangement of these agreements might take some time, but I guess this is the reason why Norway and Switzerland are the richest countries in Europe and yet aren't eager to join the EU, healthy skepticism and conservativeness do work after all:) So please spare us all the moaning guys and pull yourself together! As long as you have your sexy British accent, Big Ben and a chippy you'll be better off than anyone else! I believe in you Britain, in or outside the EU!
