Tell Us What Black History Fact You Didn’t Learn In School That You Wish You Had

Do you have a dream?

Black History Month comes around every year, and each time it seems like the same facts and people are celebrated.

The truth is, there are so many lesser-known facts about black heroes in the company of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Muhammad Ali.

For instance, we know about Jackie Robinson's celebrated Baseball Hall of Fame record, but did you know that he cofounded the black-owned (and -controlled) Freedom National Bank in 1964?

It was a historical moment when Barack Obama became the first black president of the United States, but did you know that he's also a Grammy Award winner, along with Michelle Obama? Both Barack and Michelle won Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.

We’re familiar with Rosa Parks, but before the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Claudette Colvin — who was only 15 years old at the time — was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, after she refused to give up her seat to a white woman.

Maybe you’ve always had a self-taught approach to learning and gained black history knowledge that you never learned in school.

We want to hear of the lesser-known facts that you feel should be celebrated more during Black History Month and beyond.

Comment below with the black history facts that you found to be surprising, and you could be featured in a BuzzFeed Community post or video.
