1. Invest in a Hair-Retrieval System

If you are going to be a proud (new) parent to a puppy with fur--specifically, the kind of fur that will eventually turn your carpet in to a fuzzy forest, consider investing in an industrial-grade vacuum or a Roomba. Seriously, it's borderline impossible to lock-down all of the shedding that will commence.

Expect any that you have to magically appeal to your pet during the "potty training" phase. As in, your puppy will inherently know that it's literally the last place in the world you'd want them to make a mess--but they'll proceed to do so anyway. If you don't have stain resistant carpet, make sure to get a Costco Membership so you can invest in a lifetime supply of Resolve.

It's a scientific fact that your puppy will chew through some of your desktop cords, your dangling-over-the-edge-of-the-bathroom-counter curling iron cord, and at least two of your (expensive!!!!) phone-charger cords. Consider this a fair warning--keep any and all cords out of sight and preferably out of reach. Once dogs get a taste for electronic extensions, it becomes an insatiable blood lust that will only end in tears (at least from one of you).

4. Sibling Rivalry: The Struggle is Real

If you currently own a pet (or pets) that have ruled the roost prior to the impending puppy addition, be prepared for a variety of legitimate emotional responses, ranging from jealousy to indifference. Usually, these situations buff themselves out after a few weeks of awkward moments. If the pet-rivalry continues for an unacceptable amount of time, sit the animals down and make them watch "Step Brothers." This should solve the problem.

5. Don't Worry About Holiday Decor

Go ahead and skip out on decorations that will be at eye level for a curious puppy. This includes, but is not limited to: lights, candles, balloons, confetti, presents, and small children. Do not trust those innocent puppy eyes for even a minute; small dogs can do big damage!
