10 Summer ‘Movies In The Park’ To See In NYC For FREE

Are you going to be in NYC this summer? Do you like movies? Do you like free things? If you answered yes to at least two of those, you need to fill in your calendar with a bunch of free movies that you will find scattered about the city. Starting in May and running through the end of August, you’re guaranteed to find at least one movie that you absolutely cannot miss. Make sure to get to there early. Space is limited and will fill up fast. Don’t miss out!

1. Top Gun (May 23- Intrepid Museum, Manhattan)

If you’re anywhere between 20-35 and you haven’t seen this movie, you are terrible at being an adult. This is your chance to change that. 80s Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. Why have you waited so long to see this classic?

2. Gravity (June 11- Pier A Park, Hoboken)

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney floated in space for 90 minutes and “Gravity” was considered one of the best films of the year. By some, one of the best “space” movies ever made. I don’t actually know if they only floated in space, they may have done other things, but I don’t know, because I never saw the movie. Which is why it made this list. Because I am definitely not missing it!

3. Saving Mr. Banks (June 25- Pier A Park, Hoboken)

This was my personal favorite movie of the year. If you love Walt Disney, Mary Poppins, Disneyland, the Sherman Brothers, anything 50s/60s and pretending you are a 10 year old girl again, you need to see this. Tom Hanks is the perfect Walt Disney and every other actor portrays exactly what I imagine their real-life counterparts would have been.

4. Clueless (July 9- Riverside Park, Manhattan)

I know most of you can actually recite this movie, word for word, beginning to end. But who actually misses an opportunity to see Clueless? You can stop watching it alone on Netflix and watch it with your friends, outside, in a sweet park next to the Hudson River.

5. Back to the Future (July 16- Riverside Park, Manhattan)

This is probably about 50% of the worlds favorite movie so of course its on this list. While we’re waiting on the Hoverboard to happen make sure you catch Marty McFly on the big screen. No matter how many times you see this movie, its never gets old.

6. Ghostbusters (July 18- Pier 46, Manhattan)

Where better to watch Ghostbusters than Manhattan, where it was filmed. It’s almost like you’re in the middle of the action! But your friend probably wont be possessed by a demon named “Zuul” and you more than likely wont be crushed by a 10 story marshmallow man.

7. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (July 30-Pier A Park, Hoboken)

E.T. is one of the most popular movies ever made, but if you’re anything like me, you haven’t seen it in a really long time. This is a can’t miss opportunity to re-live your childhood, without E.T. actually being terrifying to look at.

8. Groundhog Day (August 8- Pier 46, Manhattan)

Winter lasted a really long time this year because Punxsutawney Phil is a giant jerk. Now that its stopped snowing, I can comfortably watch Bill Murray re-live Groundhog Day over and over (and over and over) again. I was also 25 before I first saw this movie, so if you’re like me and somehow let it slip through your childhood, now is a good time to check it out!

9. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (August 13- Pier 63 Lawn, Manhattan)

Even if you are not a fan of Sci-Fi movies, this is one to see. Make sure to check out The Hunger Games before you see ‘Catching Fire’ or it may be hard to follow. This movie runs 146 minutes so you will need to make sure you’re comfortable and bring lots of snacks so you don’t get hungry and turn the Pier 63 Lawn into an arena!

10. Monsters University (August 19- Crocheron Park, Queens)

Another Disney movie makes the list. You’re lucky that I only added two, because I had a lot more Disney movies to pick from! Pixar movies never disappoint and Monsters University was no different. The prequel for Monsters Inc. was something I never knew I needed until it was made. Trust me, you need this as well.
