While most tend to gravitate toward their fright film favorites, spooky season is also a perfect excuse to check out some previously unseen genre gems. 1. The Beyond (1981)

Lucio Fulci's iconic cinematic fever dream follows a young woman who inherits a remote hotel in Louisiana and discovers it may contain a gateway to hell.

2. Braid (2019)

3. Eye See You (2002)

Sylvester Stallone stars in a rare horror performance elevated by a stellar ensemble cast in this film about a distressed cop who is enrolled in a remote rehabilitation program, only to find one of the patients may be a prolific serial killer.

4. Deathgasm (2015)

Jason Lei Howden's absurdly bloody horror comedy from New Zealand follows an impressionable young metalhead who stumbles upon sheet music for an ancient song with the ability to summon the dead.

5. The Endless (2017)

Before they were selected to direct episodes of Moon Knight and Loki, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson crafted this incredibly atmospheric horror film about a pair of death cult survivors who receive a mysterious invitation to return to the campground from which they once fled, only to find a group of eerily welcoming strangers as well as other surreal surprises.

6. Pet (2016)

Dominic Monaghan, Ksenia Solo, and Jennette McCurdy headline this twist-filled story about a perturbed animal shelter worker who kidnaps a manipulative young woman with a secret, sparking a deranged battle of wits between the two.

8. The Black Phone (2022)

The horror film event of Summer 2022, Sinister director Scott Derrickson's adaptation of Joe Hill's harrowing novella surrounds a young boy who must rely on his supernaturally gifted sister and the specters of recently deceased children to save him from the grasp of a sadistic serial murderer.

9. Shocker (1989)

Wes Craven tried to capture lightning in a bottle with this cult classic spotlighting Freddy Krueger-esque killer Horace Pinker, who can possess people through electric transference in order to continue terrorizing his targets from beyond the grave.

10. Thirst (2009)

From Park Chan-wook, the filmmaker behind such acclaimed Korean films as Oldboy and The Handmaiden, Thirst follows a priest who becomes a vampire after a botched medical procedure as he carefully navigates the complications of living as a vampire as well as his forbidden attraction to his best friend's unpredictable and uninhibited wife.

11. Starry Eyes

12. Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995)

One of the most fun horror films to emerge from the '90s, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight assembles an incredible ensemble cast (including a career-best Billy Zane) to tell the tale of a remote inn that comes under siege by bloodthirsty demonic forces.

13. Body Bags (1993)

Co-directed by horror legends John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper, this eerie anthology film starring Mark Hamill, Stacy Keach, and Deborah Harry was originally developed as Showtime's equivalent to Tales from the Crypt.

15. Frankenhooker (1990)

One of the macabre masterpieces from New York-based schlock horror filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, this hysterical and absurd cult favorite surrounds a grief-stricken scientist who decides to resurrect his recently deceased fiancée in a sex worker's body, only to find out she's inherited her new form's proclivities as well.

16. The Funhouse (1981)

From the director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this nerve-wracking '80s slasher follows a group of teenagers who unwittingly witness a murder while staying after hours at a carnival, putting them in the path of the eccentric ringmaster and his volatile masked assistant.

17. The Innkeepers (2011)

Before he exploded back onto the horror scene in 2022 with X and Pearl, Ti West carved his name out in the genre with his breakout film, The House of the Devil, and its moody and haunting follow-up, The Innkeepers, an old fashioned ghost story about a pair of employees at a soon-to-close hotel who decide to dedicate their final days on the job to exploring the property's hidden (and horrific) history.

18. Separation (2021)

Directed by William Brent Bell, who has found success in the horror genre with The Boy and Orphan: First Kill, this contemporary creep show surrounds a young woman and her artist father as they begin to experience inexplicable events after the sudden death of the family's estranged matriarch.

19. The Stepfather (1987)

Loosely based on the true crime story of murderer John List, The Stepfather is a beloved psychological horror flick about a suburban teenager who begins to suspect her new picture-perfect stepfather may not be as squeaky clean as his demeanor suggests.

22. Open 24 Hours (2018)

In this taut and entertaining thriller, a woman who nearly murdered her serial killer boyfriend is forced by her parole officer to work a night shift at a 24-hour gas station, over the course of which she has to learn if the odd things she is seeing are real or paranoid hallucinations.
