    Miley's Own Backyard

While Miley Cyrus may be known for her crazy and fun antics, people need to remember how raw her voice really is. Which is why if you haven’t done so already, you MUST listen to and watch Miley Cyrus’ Backyard Sessions on YouTube or below. The videos were actually posted in 2012 on Cyrus' Youtube channel. They are insane, wicked smooth and soulful to the point where if you did not know these were cover songs, you would think this was original music by the rocker teen-queen. “Look What They’ve Done to my Song” is flawless. Her voice is so fluid and sounds great with guitars backing her up. This was the first of the three songs that I listened to and made me want to listen to the others. I like how Miley can make a song from the 70’s popular again. Melanie Safka originally sang this song and by all regards was fantastic, but Miley has a way of making the song all her own. Proving that Miley’s talent doesn’t stop at singing pop songs and dressing in the blonde wig that transforms her into Hannah Montana, she has more depth as an artist than that. Trust me when I say this song is ridiculously AWESOME. “Jolene” is my favorite; it is jazzier than the original. Did I mention Miley’s godmother Dolly Parton, who is in her own right clearly a legend, sings the original version which came out in October of 1973. When Miley sings “Jolene,” you can see the emotion is her eyes and body language. Even though Miley is a young woman who may not have dealt with the message of this song, she has this tone and magic in her sound that makes her believable. Anyone can see and feel the desire she has to do the song justice. From my point of view, she definitely did. If I were Dolly Parton I would be a proud godmother. “Lilac Wine” is pretty impressive as well. The song flows so smoothly and Miley’s voice sounds AMAZING. I never heard the original song before listening to Miley’s rendition, but I definitely have to listen to the original now. The heartache expressed in the song feels so real when Miley sings. The song is slow, but draws the listener in. It shows off the talent of Miley’s band as well. Her drummer is really talented and clearly has skills, which he shows when he plays “Lilac Wine”. Many artists have covered the song since James Shelton first released it in 1950, like Elkie Brooks and Jeff Buckley and Miley’s version falls right into place with all those greats form the past. Hearing songs like these in today’s age of techno, party and house music restores my hope that artists will go back to the oldies like Dolly Parton and James Shelton. Music like this has emotion and tells a story that so many people can relate to instead of singing about things like drinking and partying.
