10 Reasons Why It's Hard To Adult After College

Your whole life you dream of growing up so you can do whatever you want and live out your dreams. Turns out, it pretty much sucks.

1. You aren’t going to live the Pinterest dream.

That board you have on Pinterest of your dream apartment or house? Probably should forget about it. Your salary right out of college will probably only get you a studio apartment in the basement of a building with no windows to the outside world. Handy because it's harder for murderers to enter your home, but it's kind of hard to make your sad apartment look Tumblr af when you have no discretionary income. And putting together IKEA furniture isn’t as easy as it should be.

2. The Freshman 15 is nothing compared to the rest of your life.

Turns out when your parents cut you off, so does your metabolism. Chances are you played some sport through college and high school, or you at least got off the couch and stopped watching Netflix to walk to a couple of your classes. Well, when you have a job in corporate America, you become one with your desk chair for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Does wonders for your figure.

3. Say goodbye to all those dreams of travel.

Your parents will pretty much stop inviting you on vacation, and with your salary and vacation time, you probably aren’t going on any luxurious vacations to exotic lands anytime soon.

4. Surprise! Acne still exists.

Your whole childhood was a lie. Acne doesn't magically go away when you become an adult.

5. No more life milestones.

Every semester you could encourage yourself by saying “Only X amount of weeks until break.” Every summer job or internship you knew only would last until three months until you could take a break for nine months. Well guess what? You are going to work until you die. Fun.

6. Holidays are not about you any more.

You are no longer on the receiving end of Christmas gifts. You now have to deal with the anxiety of picking out and paying for other people’s gifts. Terrible.

7. Birthdays are no longer a reason to celebrate.

You wanted to turn 16 so you could drive, 18 so you could get a tattoo, 21 so you could legally drink. Who wants to turn 28? No one, that’s who. Besides the obligatory office birthday card, you aren’t going to get shit.

8. You have no idea how your benefits work.

Have you ever checked your 401k or IRA? No, because no one knows how those work. It’s just money you don't have to buy food. Insurance? You aren’t mature or responsible enough to talk to a doctor anyway. That’s what the Internet is for. WebMD never lies. If it turns out you’re dying, your mom can always call the doctor for you.

9. You develop a love hate relationship with food.

Every week you go to the grocery store with the goal of eating healthy. You buy a bunch of perishable foods that end up rotting in your fridge before you have the chance to eat them. When you do cook the food, you end up having to eat leftovers for a week and you begin to hate life. Your fridge will only ever contain one Tupperware container of unwanted leftovers and condiments. It will never be full.

10. Life events keep happening to everyone else but you.

A day doesn't go by that someone on Facebook isn’t graduating, getting a job, getting a promotion, getting engaged, getting married, having a baby or generally being a contributing member to society. You didn't leave your apartment all day on Sunday and you screen phone calls so you can just listen to the voicemail and text them back.
