#1. He had a tattoo removed (partially) / Via

When Johnny Depp fell in love with Winona Ryder, he got a tattoo that read "Winona Forever" to prove his love for her. After the couple broke up, he was stuck with the permanence forever, or so we thought. The clever actor had "na" removed so now the tattoo reads "Wino Forever".

#2. Not only is he an amazing actor, but he's a rock star too! / Via

Aside from playing in the band P, Depp has played with Oasis, Alice Cooper, the Pogues' Shane MacGowan, and recorded acoustic guitar tracks for his films Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

#3. Once a pirate, always a pirate / Via

Depp has said, "Sometimes you fall in love with who you're playing. As filming winds down, you hear the clock ticking because you know you're going to leave your character behind and a kind of odd separation anxiety kicks in. You get irritable and just sort of melancholy."

#8. He is friends with Keith Richards / Via

They aren't just friends, they are really close friends. Not only do they occasionally jam together, but Depp has been working on a documentary about the musician for the last few years.

#9. He's still got style / Via

Depp is slightly older than most hipsters, but he's still got it. From his badass goatee-mustache combo, to his collection of scarves and suede hats, Depp is one of the coolest guys we know.

#12. He has had a near death experience / Via

According to Depp, it wasn't all fun and games when he was shooting The Rum Diary. He told Live magazine, "The plane just shot down. The sound of the engines stopped... It was like this weird extended moment when you're just floating for a second and you could feel this unpleasant descent."

#13. He owns an island / Via

While filming Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp fell in love with the Bahamas. Depp bought Little Hall's Pond Cay, a 45-acre, one mile long island that's part of the Exuma archipelago, which set him back $3.6 million and features a private harbor, a palm-tree lined lagoon, and six sugar-sand sand beaches. Depp has aptly nicknamed it "F--- Off Island."

#15. He may have saved someone's life once / Via

In 2008, a UK tabloid supposedly reported that Depp kept a group of extras safe from harm on the set of Public Enemies. Depp may or may not have shielded a small crowd of people from an out-of-control 1933 Ford with his body. Rumor has it he also once protected a friend from a robber wielding a broken bottle.

#18. He tips generously / Via

While filming Public Enemies in Chicago, Depp struck up a friendship with Mohammaed Sekhani, a waiter at Gibson's Steakhouse. Back in Chicago for the premeire, Depp showed his appreciation by leaving an extra $4,000 tip on top of the $4,400 bill.
