34 Small Tips To Take Your Style To The Next Level This Year

Get ready to become your own style icon from here on out.

Unless otherwise specified, all sizes in this post are listed in women's.

    1. Rock multiple rings — they can look super cool even (and perhaps especially) if they're mismatched. Collect ones you love with personal significance and wear them all together, or speed up the process by buying an eclectic pre-made set.

    2. Use lipstick as an accessory!!! A bold color lippie is perfect for matching a similar hue in the pattern of your outfit or to add a pop to a neutral look. Either way, it makes the whole ensemble feel tied together and stepped up a notch (as you can tell, this is one of my personal fave styling tricks).

    3. Play with proportions and show off your shoes by cuffing your jeans. Bonus: it'll disguise frayed hems and make an old pair look new.

    4. Invest in a truly great bag that will elevate anything you wear. It could be a recognizable designer bag that instantly screams *fashion*, sure, but it can also just be an eye-catching color or unique design that'll attract compliments like a magnet.

    5. If you're bored with your go-to bag, but don't want to splurge on a new one, give your carryall a fresh twist by adding a contrasting crossbody strap. It's a cheap way to make your purse look like a designer dupe, and you can get several to switch around and make it seem like you have a new bag every time!

    6. And if you'd love to coordinate your bag to your outfit more often, but internally groan at the idea of moving all your crap in and out of your go-to carryall (same), try a handy purse organizer so all you have to do is move one pouch between bags.

    7. Do a closet clean out — as much as it pains you, it will have several benefits for not just your space, but your style! You'll be left with only things you actually still like and that fit, leaving more space for you to make new purchases if you want/need. Plus, you'll more than likely find some cute things you TOTALLY forgot about and should wear more often.

    8. Relatedly, get your stuff where you can see it (like with some space-saving hangers)! With my wardrobe, so often out of sight = out of mind. Plus, some of my best outfit ideas come to me just from seeing pieces hanging near each other and realizing they would look great together.

    9. Same thing with jewelry! You've worked hard to amass that epic accessory collection, so opt for an organizer that can show off all your necklaces, bracelets, earrings, *and* rings and let you see all your options.

    10. Give your look an edgy shot of texture by letting funky socks peek out.

    11. Rock dressy shoes with casual outfits and vice versa. Sneakers and combat boots look badass with party dresses, and heels dress up casual dresses and jeans.

    12. The same principle applies with tops and bottoms! You're probably no stranger to the classic ~cute top and jeans~ combo, but have you tried a sweatshirt or button down paired with a tulle or metallic skirt? 10/10 recommend.

    13. Find a great pair of sunglasses you can pop on with every outfit to instantly add an "I'm a VIP" vibe to any look.

Promising review: "I absolutely adore these shades. They have such a rich, sophisticated, and classy look. They have an extremely sturdy construction, with a good weight to them, and are trendy. The packaging was great; the magnetic case, insert, and dust cloth make you think you paid $100+, but I only paid $15. 😊 Well worth it and I would buy again." —Msjayyb

Get them from Amazon for $12.98 (available in 11 styles).

    14. Opting for some hot hot hot lingerie under your outfit on special occasions (whether a partner will see it ~later~ or not) can make you feel badass and confident all day, regardless of what you're wearing on top of it.

    15. Stack bracelets to give any outfit a personal, eye-catching accent. The trick to a great stack? Mixing the width and texture of your arm candy, while keeping a consistent color scheme.

    16. Similar rules apply when layering necklaces. Mix chunkier ones with more delicate pendants and, of course, make sure they're all slightly different lengths. You can also cheat and buy a layered necklace, which looks like multiple pieces but is actually only one. (I won't tell.)

    17. And if you struggle to rock the layered-necklace look without them turning into a tangled mess, try a special clasp designed to help you easily sport several strands at once.

    18. Go for a jumpsuit to help you, well, jump out of a style rut. The best buy is one you can dress up with heels and a necklace for dinner but that's also comfy enough to run errands in instead of opting for sweatpants...again.

I have a romper I love by this brand (which was founded by a mom and daughter!) and it's great quality and cozy like a well-made sweatshirt. This design even has a flirty keyhole back!

Promising review: "I love everything about this romper! The fit, the fabric and the style! The keyhole opening also make it easy to get in and out of. Definitely a romper that is elevated enough to wear around town." —Gillian S.

Get it from Smash + Tess for $135 (available in sizes 2XS–4X).

    19. Slide on a hair accessory (or several) to add a cool focal point to your look that'll stand out even more than regular jewelry — and keep all eyes on your cute 'do, of course.

    20. Streamline your look when you want to tuck a top into pants or a skirt by going for a bodysuit instead! Your 'fit will be sleek without any awkwardly bunched-up fabric.

    21. Find some footwear that works for everyday, but is a ~step~ up from your basic sneakers and flats. For example, these Betsey Johnson sneakers have a platform to give your a bit of height and are bedazzled like nobody's business.

    22. Master the basics of pattern mixing, and don't be afraid to play around. Your leopard print flats and floral skirt are made to pair with wayyyy more than just basics (in fact, they'd probably be cute together). Tossing on a contrasting print jacket or accessory basically creates a whole new 'fit.

    23. Or get started with a dress that does the print mixing for you (these designs nailed it, IMHO).

    24. Invest in a great faux-leather moto jacket, then toss it over pretty much everything in your wardrobe. I can't think of a single thing — whether it's a floral dress, a tee and jeans, a jumpsuit, or even a formal gown — that wouldn't go from blah to ~fashion~ real quick under one of these.

    25. If you love the layered look but hate the bulky feeling of layers, try a collared dickey to dress up a sweater, sweatshirt, or crewneck dress. Bonus points if it has glam embellishments.

    26. Accent your look with easy and durable nail art on the cheap — I'm talking about nail strips you just stick on, clip or file to fit, then seal with top coat. Yes, it's more of a beauty tip than a fashion tip, but cool nails can really feel like the finishing touch to a great outfit.

    27. Don't dismiss brooches as pieces that only belong in your grandma's jewelry box. They make any jacket way more interesting, and can even be fastened on the strap of a dress or at the collar of a blouse when you don't have a necklace that fits the bill.

    28. Try out a two-piece set — not just because they're trending and they give you Taylor Swift 1989-era energy (though those are both good reasons), but because they just plain look chic and basically do all the styling work for you.

    29. If you love the look of multiple piercings but not so much the getting more piercings part, try out some cool ear cuffs to give you the vibe without the commitment. They'll add an instant edge to your everyday look.

Promising review: "Love these ear cuffs. I am 62-years-old and do not want to get another piercing at the top of my ear, so this works out great. I don't even feel the earring there." —Shelly

Get one for $7.92 (available in two styles and two metals) or the set of two for $14.24 (available in two metals), both from Benittamoko on Etsy.

    30. Try some earlobe support patches so you'll actually be able to wear those statement earrings you dream of without the pain and the stretched-out piercings. I  just ordered these because I want to be able to wear my big earrings several days in a row without my poor ears being all, "Um, NO."

Promising review: "These are amazing. They are literal lifesavers. I LOVE my heavy Kendra Scott earrings, but I’m pretty sure they’re the culprit of why my right earring hole has ripped slightly. Using these support patches, it’s as if the earrings don’t even exist. I am going to tell all of my friends to get these for their heavy statement earrings!!" —Donthemom50

    31. Don't be afraid of hats! A classic felt fedora literally and figuratively tops off a look and lends an effortlessly cool vibe.

I have this hat and it's so cute! I am not a huge hat person, but I *am* a huge purple person, so the rich royal hue sent this affordable style statement to the top of my wish list. I've only worn it once so far (with the outfit above), but it was an absolute compliment magnet that day and it made me feel like a rockstar — not at all silly like I feared it might. I already have several ideas for more ways to wear this outfit-maker, and I 10/10 recommend for a style upgrade.

Promising review: "This hat is EVERYTHING. You will feel like a new person when you go out with this thing. It completes your look. It hides your sweaty greasy roots after being out all day. It doubles great as a fan. Fits a normal head and your big head friends with ease. Need to be basic? Gonna be Crocodile Dundee for Halloween? You already know. I’m about to order three more in different colors because it is so versatile and a whole MOOD. Buy the hat. Enjoy your brunch." —brettenie saldana

Get it from Amazon for $22.99+ (available in 30 colors).

    32. Embrace the fact that vests (especially of the waistcoat style) are back, bb! But you don't have to style them like a Disney Channel star in 2009 — button one over a T-shirt and under a jacket for a streetstyle-esque take on classic suiting or button it up all the way and wear it solo like a top.

    33. Add polish to a simple tee- or sweater-and-jeans combo by looping on a minimal chic belt, especially one with an eye-catching buckle.

    34. Want to take even your workout wardrobe to the next level? Swap sports bras and bike shorts for a workout-friendly dress that has the compression of the former and is lined with the latter. This one is made from recycled plastic bottles and is cute enough to wear on weekend errand runs, too.

Promising review: "I absolutely love this dress. This is certainly going to be a staple piece in my wardrobe when it warms up. I love the cut of the dress as well, it’s not too short, but just short enough. The built in one-piece is great! The shorts are just long enough that I feel super comfortable." —Pilar B.
