Why San Francisco Is The City Of Contradictions

It's all too much to take in. So take it in.

San Francisco is pretty magical, and if you've never been there it should probably be near the top of your list. But it's definitely a city of contradictions. Don't know what I mean? Let's see here.

You feel both extremely poor and extremely rich.

The city has one of the highest costs of living in the United States. It's actually ridiculous, and you feel cheated because you can't afford to live in such a perfect place. But if you craft the perfect Instagram post, you could probably make yourself seem wealthy enough to be leisurely drinking your latte with a butter croissant on a nice wood table before your glamorous day on the town.

You feel like your being so "green" but also like you're really destroying the environment.

The city has reminders to recycle and conserve water everywhere you could possibly look. They have bikes to rent so you don't drive a car. But after a long day of day drinking and consuming butter-covered delicacies, the last thing you want is to do any physical activity whatsoever. With options like taxis, Uber, trollies, and BART, why would you ever dream of going anywhere any other way?

You're too old to be there, but too young to not. If that makes sense.

Everywhere you turn, you feel like you've been thrown back in time. But it's also super weirdly modern, too. You find yourself asking, "Am I too old to fit in here?" The answer is yes. And no. You may be too old to be smoking a joint in The Haight, but you're too young to not. Got it? Good.

Feel overdressed? You might be under-dressed. Or not.

Fashion in San Francisco is pretty crazy. There are trendy hipsters in flannel and high-waisted shorts, and then there are city-slickers in stilettos and an Armani dress. Either way, you'll definitely fit in while also standing out.

You feel inferior from all the wonderful things around you, and also overwhelmingly inspired.

You are surrounded by beautiful people, beautiful art, and beautiful scenery. It can make one feel a little less-than-talented than the rest of the world, but you feel so crazy inspired to achieve something greater. That's the most magical thing about San Francisco. You'll feel completely different.

Like I said: It's the city of contradictions. You can't understand it until you've experienced it. So what's stopping you? Just go.
