How A Friendly Competition Turned Me Into A Book Worm

Literacy is important. Everyone has a tale of how they learned how to read. This is mine.

Introducing literacy at a young age is very important. It can effect a child’s future skill set.

Once a child learns to read, a book can take them on many adventures.

The book that started my love of reading was called Tikki Tikki Tembo.

My 2nd grade teacher chose that book for the class's timed fluency readings.

She recorded us reading on this "vintage" cassette tape so that we could listen to our fluency improvement.

Her reading nook was even decked out with bean bag chairs.

Of course I wanted to be the fastest reader. I became a little competitive.

Triggering my natural competiveness nurtured my love for reading. I fell in love with reading and dreamt of having a library full of books.

I became an avid reader because of my teacher's efforts. I also got my wish of having a library.

When my daughter was learning how to read I gave her Tikki Tikki Tembo and challenged her with fluency readings.

Fluency readings helped my daughter become a top reader in her class.

Of course, at age 8, she is still interested in Tinkerbell, Ninja Turtles and becoming a warrior princess.

In the end, a love of literacy can be passed down generations. It can start simply with a dedicated teacher and a little competition.
