Every woman knows what it's like to be hollered at, and if you're a guy, maybe you know what it's like to holler at a lady. There are movements to highlight the very real threat and challenge that street harassment creates for millions of women every day across the globe. While some of these platforms, like StopStreetHarassment.org and the Everyday Sexism Project, are predicated on the belief that stories of trauma motivate change, there's also something to be said for humor.
Namely, the genius videos of Vine star Brittany Furlan, whose recurring series "How To Hit On Guys The Way They Hit On Girls," underlies the preposterousness of unwanted hollering by turning the tables on men. Watch as Brittany lasciviously beckons passersby from the safety of her vehicle, to hilarious effect. Words women hear every day on the street become ridiculous and uncalled for simply because Brittany's not a dude. Eerie? Disturbing? Silly? Awkward? I'd say all of the above. But after all, some of the most effective and subversive social commentary has always come packaged in a joke (I'm looking at you, Louis C.K. and Richard Pryor). Who knows—maybe you'll laugh, maybe it will inspire social change.
